dravidian influence on sanskrit phonology Empty dravidian influence on sanskrit phonology

i've been reading a bit on this topic. the usual focus on this board is on one aspect of linguistic relationships between indian languages, namely vocabulary. there are many other aspects of linguistics to consider and phonology is one of them. there is one very prevalent view that the entire phonology of retroflex consonants in sanskrit is inherited wholly from dravidian languages. here is a recent paper:

http://elte.academia.edu/FerencRuzsa/Papers/461897/The_influence_of_Dravidian_on_Indo-Aryan_phonetics

retroflex consonants are quite rare and almost non-existent in non-indic IE languages.

and this becomes patently clear when you ask your american/european friends to say the word "ganesh". they'll usually have difficulty with the ण/ண sound.
