do you listen to jazz music at all?
Re: do you listen to jazz?
wonder who the person put off by the dissonance is. i used to have this problem when i first started listening. the key then is to go back to big band jazz from the 30s and 40s from the louis "satchmo" armstrong, duke ellington, and sidney bechet era which tends to have straighter melodic lines. easier on indian ears for a start. once you understand how the music and the groove work and the central concept of swing, it's easier to listen to more modern stuff and learn to appreciate it.

and in the process of discovering big band jazz, you'll also discover how much the bombay cinema wallahs from the 50s and 60s have scammed off american jazzmen.

Re: do you listen to jazz?
It was me. I totally and fully appreciate the older era Jazz and the 'easy listening' aspect of that with the occasional cymbals and melodic sax.
I have problems appreciating the modern 'cacophonous' renderings. May be its a mindset of what I think *music* should be? In general, I dont have a lot of musicality.

i listen to it from time to time and it is my thing these days only because i am working with a particular musician who has been keeping my interest high. don't know what will happen later. since this was not on your list, i did not vote:-)

I listen to jazz from time to time, and more than listening them to on the radio, I like- live jazz..music festivals, and we have a lot in the South..esp. places like Memphis, where the atmosphere is great to listen to them..I like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis..of course Sarah Vaughn..
Like more upbeat-soft and smooth-jazz singers like the sultry Sade.

melody with a difference. astrud gilberto's bossa-nova-jazz renderings in portuguese and english, an intriguing voice, and fascinating progressions of notes and half-notes:atcg wrote:It was me. Re: do you listen to jazz?
Thanks for the links...Enjoyed Sade and Astrud.
Maria - Sade sounds like an Rx for a quiet evening of relaxation. Lovely.
VTP - Astrud is awesome...just the right touch of mischief, and quickening pulse of anticipation.

Re: do you listen to jazz?
since we seem to be posting old favorites here (enjoyed astrud), here are two of my perennial favorite bechet tunes. bechet was often mournful, but his art was always amazing.
listen to him growl on the sax here playing summertime an old jazz standard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1u95xuq65m4
bechet on the clarinet on the next one. love the tremolos. it's an old style of playing which has disappeared from jazz (somewhat analogous to brigas disappearing to a large extent from carnatic music):

Sidney Bechet (esp. clarinet) is like a glass of fine scotch - loved these pieces.

Re: do you listen to jazz?
i've known the lyrics to summertime and the background of the song for a while, but i enjoyed reading about it again. joplin's version is really something. don't think i've seen it before or if i have, i've forgotten about it. it's almost a cliche, but from great pain and struggle often comes beautiful music.
but by far bechet's is my favorite version. he too was a very troubled man and it's like he has melted his entire being into the sax in summertime. i especially love the growls.

blab, i'm not a jazz fan but if I ever see you playing a cello that's nestled between your statuesque thighs, I WILL LISTEN.

and miles's cool version:

very good as miles always is, but doesn't have the gut punch feel of bechet or joplin.
