Can any APite with good knowledge about Telugu politics explain how this new party was able to win so many seats in the recent bypoll ?

I am sure money played a role, but still the good showing all around beats me.

Jagan and YSR are big on populist schemes and poor uneducated masses are gullible. who cares about anything else.

Yeah, ppl in India love the stuff they get for free. Beggars of the worst kind! They consider YSR a God, as someone who has given away his personal wealth to the masses. Little do they realize that continuing with the welfare schemes for the second term would've been impossible because the state's coffers were already drained. The premature death of YSR has made him some kind of larger than life hero.

With Jagan's arrest, they see the hypocrisy and highhandedness of Sonia. They wanted to teach her a lesson. The negative vote has added to Jagan's advantage too.

Most of it is out of sympathy - the guy being put in jail, grilled by CBI etc. They didn't do a good job (not just govt., but also his rival newspapers like Eenadu and Andhrajyoti) of making the corruption angle stick.

Jagan's sweep is remarkable. Congress was beaten down. TDP was decimated. Despite being leaderless his party won the elections. 80% voting indicates very involved public. Voting booths were on web and rigging was difficult. It was clear and well known that jagan made billion of rupees (and dollars) through corrupt methods.

Still the people of AP in all their wisdom (probably not much around) chose him. It is predicted from two to three months that Jagan will sweep the elections. Jagan's arrest and sympathy , money, Reddy caste feelings and all other execuses do not explain this sweep. AP people have brought into a false story and voted for Jagan willingly.

AP's future looks like 1990's Bihar under Laloo. God only knows how many elections it will take for these electorate to wake up to throw away these dangerous plunderers. Who knows how much the state will go backwards due to factional lumpen element rule?
