Indian Doctors- Made in China
It seems like it was not too long ago when Chinese students were opting for Indian Medical Colleges, esp. Dental Colleges.. and Indians were opting for Russian Medical Colleges, if they could not get into Medical Colleges in India..
It was interesting to also see how quickly Chinese Students picked up on tamil words, and communicated with patients..and the patients showed mutual fondness "Andha Cheena Doctaramma nalla pathanga..or valiyillama pallu pudungunanga" (That China lady doctor was good, she pulled my tooth without any pain!)..and when it came down to charging for services, they charged half/less than what other Dentists charged- this was many years ago. Not sure, how it is now!
Lured by cheaper cost, many Indians opt for Chinese medical colleges:

Excerpts:
When I enquired about course fees at private medical colleges in India, it was not affordable. But China was affordable for my parents," says Anusree, who has just completed the first year of MBBS at Wuhan University School of Medicine, situated in China's Hubei province.
"In my batch, there are about 70 south Indians and one north Indian, though my senior batches have many from the north," says Anusree. She is part of a batch of international students numbering 90.
Like Anusree, Devu, Ameena Kamaruaheen and Balu Vallatheril are in various colleges in China, chasing their destiny to be doctors. The first trickle started about a decade ago, but the pace has picked up over the past couple of years. Now, medical colleges in China are attracting an increasing number of Indians who dream of becoming doctors, but fail to qualify in competitive examinations for state-run subsidised medical colleges, nor can afford the steep fee structure of local private colleges.

Chinese dentists and shoe-makers have been a fixture in Vizag for a long time too. They make excellent custom-made comfortable shoes. Only problem is - there's a 3-4 week wait.
When I was at engineering school in Surathkal, I used to come across many Malaysian/Singaporean/Indonesian medical stidents in the Kasturba Medical College (KMC) in Mangalore, just 10 miles away.

Nice to know! Not going to ask if there was any special dating going on with the med students:)
In general, the Indonesian/Singporean/Malaysian were quite outgoing, fun (ok, more wild!) compared to students from other countries. The women students were really into more ragging/hazing too, in my observations!
*I hear that now things are changing, which is not surprising, considering the societal changes ..Indian (women) students are into smoking, drinking, partying (more openly) etc.

Re: Indian Doctors- Made in China
However, to be eligible to practice in India, doctors graduating from these universities have to clear a screening examination conducted by the National Board of Examinations under the directive of Medical Council of India.
===> What a joke!
How many kids from Patna Medical college will pass that screening exam?

I feel these Chinese doctors may be more efficient than the reservation-quota doctors
Doc (US) replies to somu 6 hrs ago
I am Johns Hopkins trained subspecialist and currently a tenured professor at a very big University in US. Each yr we interview many docs for a single fellowship seat in our division. We finally chose a Chinese doc and believe me, he is the absolute best. The other white docs don't even compare. Chinese do a greatjob at training their docs-they aim for excellence, and excellence alone!

Yeah, they used to love the abundance of cadavers that India provides for medical students, something like 4 to 6 for each student. They can merrily cut away! Even if many of them got admission in an English medical school, they still preferred India for that important reason. It seems in England, back in those days, 4 to 5 students used to share each cadaver.

Sara,
I don't know much about Patna Medical College, so can't comment..but, there are many medical colleges who many not be ranked high, but do have good programs-which are accredited.
I was just reading this..and this did surprise me..Emory is a high-ranked Inst with a good Med.School in the US, if they engage in providing false data..not sure, who else is doing it.

It may be still true in Govt. Colleges in India. I recently heard that they are paying upto Rs. One lakh for cadavers in private medical colleges. There is nothing quite like learning from cadavers and not models. In the US they are using simulations, models more and more, due to the shortage of cadavers.

Re: Indian Doctors- Made in China
yes. ditto for kolkata. we used to buy shoes from chinese stores only in "new market." and dentists were mostly chinese. another trade they flourished in locally was tannery. there is a little china here (near poddar court) that offers authentic sichuan (i think) breakfast on the streets on sundays -- dumplings are the best. with time all these chinese entrepreneurs have moved to the restaurant business or emigrated.indophile wrote:Chinese dentists and shoe-makers have been a fixture in Vizag for a long time too. Nice pics HK!
It reminds me of the once flourishing "China Bazaar"- marketplace in Chennai..where there were all kinds of fancy-mart stuff available with also vegetable and flower markets (Badrian St) close by..and we also have "Burma Bazaar"..where one could find imported and smuggled stuff..electronics, perfumes and colognes, foreign accessories for women (shawls, scarves, handbags etc)..
They have renamed the main China bazaar Road- area Nethaji Subash Chandra Bose Road. Although there are so many superstore complexes and malls in Chennai now..people still call it China Bazaar area..and it is still bustling to a certain extent with commercial buildings and Apartment complexes being built close by.
