CUDDAPAH, JULY 26. The Inter-Caste Couples Welfare Association and CPI(M) leaders performed an inter-religious marriage of a Hindu, Kukatlapalle Ananda Rao, and a Muslim, Shaik Shahida Parveen, at the CITU office on Sunday evening.
Presiding over the marriage function, the B.R. Ambedkar Mission General Secretary, A. Sampath Kumar, said inter-religion and inter-caste marriages should be encouraged to drive away caste and religion barriers in society. Such marriages would also play a key role in eradicating dowry, caste-based discrimination and religious hatred, he observed.
Government aid sought
The Cuddapah Taluk Secretary of A.P. NGOs Association, Ravi Kumar, urged the Government to encourage inter-caste marriage by extending financial and other forms of assistance. The SC/ST Federation Secretary, S.V. Ramanaiah, asked all sections of people to give a boost to inter-caste marriage.
The association secretary, M. Chakrapani, the treasurer, S. Ranjith, the SC leader, C. Gangulaiah, the NGO leader, P. Obulesu, and the bridegroom's parents participated and blessed the couple.

State to provide Rs 50K for inter-caste marriages
May 13, 2011 DC Correspondent Hyderabad
May 12: The state government has increased the incentive for inter-caste married couples from the existing Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000 after a gap of 17 years. The amount will be shared equally by the Centre and the state government. There had been a long pending demand to increase the incentive from various associations fighting “casteism” in the society to encourage inter-caste marriages. The last time the state had increased the incentive was in 1994 when it increased the amount to Rs 10,000 from Rs 3,000.
The principal secretary of the social welfare department, Mr J. Raymond Peter, issued orders to this effect on Thursday. The Centre had been asking all states to increase the incentive to Rs 50,000 since 2006 and had written to the state government several times expressing its willingness to share 50 per cent of the amount if the incentive is increased. While some states were implementing the enhanced rates since 2007, Andhra Pradesh increased it now.
The associations fighting against casteism said that though the scheme was launched decades back, the number of beneficiaries were significantly lower due to procedural hurdles. They said less than 10,000 couples had actually benefited from the scheme while over 20,000 applications are still pending with the officials in various districts.

one other advantage of inter-caste marriages is that they will do away with the problem of caste based reservations which is something that creates animosity and divides the people of India.

HYDERABAD: They swam against the tide to break new ground and in the process, set examples for others. Even today, some of them maintain that they remain in the fringes and society does not accept them for what they are. Yet, on Tuesday, they came out to spread the message of a casteless society.
“We got married in 92. It was a big deal then. We were harassed and became the centre of attention for everyone in Hyderabad. We have two daughters, now but we made sure that their minds are free from these prejudices,” says General Secretary of Andhra Pradesh Kula Nirmulana Sangham, Md. Waheed.
On Tuesday, nearly 200 couples, who were part of inter-caste and inter-religious marriages, attended a meeting to share and discuss their experiences. The Sangham made arrangements to felicitate and celebrate the achievement of the couples.
“Since childhood, thanks to my parents, I was unaware of my caste. It is important for parents to keep children away from the perils of caste and religious bias” says G. Ujwal, an IBM employee, who married Rekha of a different caste. “We belong to no religion or caste. Caste did not make any difference to us and we want to spread this message to others,” says Rekha.
Most of the couples pointed out that inter-caste and inter-religious marriages do pose practical difficulties in getting adjusted with society. “In schools, they insist that we mention our caste during admissions. We have always maintained that we are Indians first,” points out Jyothi, wife of Mr. Waheed.
Many Sangham members said that the State was not passing on the incentives, which were launched by the Central government for inter-religious and inter-caste couples. “The Central government provides Rs. 50,000 to such couples. However, that incentive never trickles down. Our organisation, till date, has counselled and conducted over 1,000 inter-caste and inter-religious marriages,” says Waheed.

even though the muslim guy converted to hinduism to marry the hindu girl he loved (and who in turn loved him), the Hindutva organizations (and also the girl's family) went after the guy. Truly shameful and a disgrace to hinduism and its philosophy of vasudeva kutumbukam.

MUMBAI/BHOPAL: In an unusual development, Bombay High Court and MP High Court came to the rescue of a Muslim-Hindu couple, Mohammed Umer and Priyanka Wadhwani, who were facing death threats allegedly from Bajrang Dal after their marriage.
On April 2 Priyanka and Umer left Bhopal for Mumbai. The next day Umer underwent shuddhikaran (purification ceremony) and converted to Hinduism after changing his name to Umesh. The same day they got married in a traditional Hindu ceremony.
Despite both being adults the Bhopal police had lodged a case of kidnapping against Umer. "His brother was picked up by the Koh-Fiza police in Bhopal and detained illegally," the couple's petition filed in the Bombay High Court alleged.
Justice Ranjana Desai and Justice Dilip Bhosale of Bombay High Court held that the couple who had fled from Bhopal to take shelter in Mumbai were married and ordered the Mumbai police to provide them protection.
The judges have also restrained the Bhopal police from arresting Umer against whom a case of kidnapping has been registered at the behest of the girl's parents.
"We are relieved," said Priyanka, emerging out of the court. "I left of my own free will and was not kidnapped. My husband's family is being harassed by the police in MP and we hope the court's order will put a stop to it."
The family dispute over the inter-religious marriage took a political colour when Bajrang Dal activists organised protests outside Umer's home in Bhopal. The couple also said they were threatened with physical harm if they returned to Bhopal.
The Bombay HC judges interviewed Priyanka in their chamber where she reiterated that she was an adult and had left her parents' house of her own will. Besides ordering protection to the couple, the judges have also asked Bhopal SP to file a reply to the couple's petition by April 18.
Madhya Pradesh High Court in Jabalpur, too, directed the state government to provide security to the newly-wed. The ruling was given on a writ filed by Mohammed Samin, one of the brothers of Umer.
In its order to the principal secretary, home, and the Bhopal collector and SP, the court has asked them to ensure the couple's safety. State advocate general R N Singh submitted before the court that the state government would provide full protection to the couple.
Chief Justice A K Patnaik and Justice K K Lahoit also directed Kohe-Fiza PS in-charge to file a reply on Samin's allegation that one of his brothers was detained at the PS on April 13.
In Bhopal, Bajrang Dal activists took to the streets, clashing with a large contingent of police, including RAF and SAF personnel, deployed in old city for protection of the minority community.
