Petition to drop charges against Mumbai girls arrested for Facebook comments
Shaheen Dhada was arrested for a comment she made on Facebook regarding the shutdown of her city on Bal Thackeray's death, and her friend Renu Singh was arrested for liking that comment. Dhada's comment was: "With all respect, everyday, thousands of people die, but still the world moves on...."
The girls were released on bail, but they have criminal charges pending against them for "promoting enmity, hatred, or ill-will between classes." Please consider signing this petition to the Commissioner of Police, Thane to drop those ridiculous charges. Please make your voice heard for free speech in India.

curious, "promoting enmity and hatred and offending religious sentiments" is a legit crime that one can be charged with? like a hate speech law or something? if yes, then however up and down you jump, how is it going to help?

Indian law is strange. This stupid law exists. But the thing is, the government rarely uses it. I don't want the government to start arresting Facebook posters now using this law. Besides, I have no idea how a statement like the one Dhada made can be construed as "promoting enmity" at all. (That's another reason the law is stupid -- it is very subjective and can be interpreted in any way by the government).
PS: Why do you have against me jumping up and down? It helps me stay in shape.

Even better, there is an IT Act under which online postings which cause "inconvenience or annoyance" can fetch the poster a 3 year prison term. Welcome to India.

I'm glad I'm not living there. Gandui ji and DKhead can't apply those laws on me!

This is good news. But yes, the law in India is ridiculous. I hope the Supreme Court throws out these draconian laws as unconstitutional.

"promoting enmity, hatred, or ill-will between classes."
Could Thackeray be charged posthumously for this crime?
