"I strongly condemn this crime, and am of the opinion that those who are found guilty by a court of law should be given harsh punishment. At the same time, I would like to know whether the same hue and cry which has been raised about it in the media and in Parliament would have been raised had this incident happened in some other part of India, particularly in rural India. .."

Diluting the gravity of the crime. eh? There would always be some nut job doing it with his/her twisted logic. Ppl react to an incident which they can identify themselves with. Ppl who are shocked and making a hue and cry are the educated ones dwelling in large cities, not the rural folks. They are doing it because it happened to someone like their own: a well educated city dweller.
