what changed india?

In recent indian history several major events shaped india. Ex: emergency, indira's murder, babri majid destruction.
what is your list of major events that shaped india? Let us not limit ourselves to politics.
economic, social, adminstrative, sports, movies, music, industrial, citi life, food, fashion, women's issues etc etc.
please be fair and explain your choice a little to help rest of understand why your choice has major impact.
My choices -
Economy - 1991 economic crises and how pvn and mms crafted a new regime of freedom for investments. This idea gained momentum to give india more than two decades of above average growth.
defence- 1998 - nuclear weapons test. Huge impact on policy. India did well to weather western isolation. Personally i think indian should NOT have gone nuclear.
Movies, music - shankarabharanam - this non mainstream movie story of a master musician gave a major boost to learning music and dance among midfle class in ap. It was a massive success in other si states. Its cultural impact is still felt in music circles.

some of us are scraching our heads and say "rakhi who". You mean rekha? Or were you referring to rakhee, wife of writer gulzar.

I do not have a good feel of her contributions or impact on indian culture?

I was only joking when I said that :-). but you got me thinking. i think in many ways she has been an avant-guarde for women in cinema to display their sexuality without feeling guilty
