No..no.. this must be Paki propaganda. Our noble defenders and protectors of Bharat Mata cannot possibly be casting impure glances at women, leave alone molesting and raping them. They are from Bharat, not India. These brave warriors are being framed by the leftist media and Maoists in Bihar.

I have been gone a while, but I remember a photograph that Kayal Vizhi once posted. It shows some women from Nagaland (or was it Mizoram) protesting naked before an Indian embassy/consulate overseas, with the banner, "Indian Army rape us." Those women were telling the truth. Perhaps KV posted that again after the Delhi horror.

Oh yeah. Some folks in the media also suddenly remembered that there is an India outside Delhi, where women get raped day in and day out, without anybody taking note, leave alone triggering mass protests. So the Manipuri women, the Shopian rape case all were freshly aired these last few days in Indian media.

Re: so you thought rapists were mostly slum dogs
I met a bunch of our friends over the last two weekends, thanks to holiday and new year parties. All the Indian women were talking about the Delhi incident. This incident has had a resonance overseas that I had not expected. Some of the women were not even raised in India, but born and raised here by parents of Indian ethnicity. I noticed that some of the men were uncomfortable talking about it, particularly those from Delhi. I heard some comments like, "I have thought off and on about returning to India, but now I don't want to." I guess in that sense, this one incident, in all its exceptional brutality, was a turning point at least for some Indian people when it comes to their impressions of their country of birth. I mentioned the rapes committed by the Indian Army, and it was interesting to observe the reactions to that.
I was also surprised by relations in India who said, "don't come back to this country, it is not worth coming back to." "Overreaction much," may be my long-term view given that this is one unusual incident, but it is nevertheless interesting to see the common man and woman so exercised about the issue of how India treats its women.

You're absolutely right. This is overreaction much. Fueled in no small part by our hysterical media. Nothing else has gotten discussed on TV channels these last three weeks. Every newspaper now makes an effort to look for rape stories from across the nation - earlier ignored as mofussil news - and publish them prominently in one page dedicated to rape.
And in the midst of all the introspection, outrage and mass protests, the rapes and molestations went on undeterred. Even the protesters got molested. This is Delhi, where women+crowds = bottom-pinching bonanza.

yes, the media was instrumental in bringing this case to international consciousness despite the fact that it is not just in delhi that such incidents occur and they occur routinely. but let me mention that the brutality of the incident and the sheer gall of the rapists was a bit unparalleled.
but why was just this incident highlighted so much? here is an article: http://www.indianexpress.com/news/national-interest-ears-wide-shut/1051654/0

And why do these outbreaks happen only in Delhi? Because India’s most improved city is also necessarily India’s most aspirational city. Also, the most impatient and unforgiving. And, for better or worse, it is the home of the national media, particularly news television. Some of us have been arguing that in cynically finessing rural against urban, the UPA has dangerously alienated the cities in a rapidly urbanising India, in spite of the fact that most of them voted for it overwhelmingly, twice. Yet, if the UPA’s arrogant and delusional message has been, our voters live in distant villages, so you city-folk go, fend for yourselves, it is being made to pay for it. The cities, particularly Delhi, have found a new voice. Television and social media are their new megaphones, and force multipliers. You can’t survive in denial of this new reality. Nor can you squash it.

It was sad to note that the molester was an Indian army soldier but it was heartening to note that the guy who caught the molester and brought him to the notice of the concerned authorities was also a soldier, one Mr Upadhyay.

Re: so you thought rapists were mostly slum dogs
I never assumed that..because I have worked/work with sexual assault cases - victims and offenders (in India and the US) and know the realities quite well.
*Let me quickly say..what I say in this post is NOT related to the Delhi case - I know very little about medico-legal facts (nature of injuries) in this case..except it's a horrific gang rape-murder and hope it serves as a trigger and good societal-changes and changes in the Judicial system come about it.
Since HK has posted about military offenders, in case anyone did not know..Military environments, College Campuses (or even High Schools- go on line and google about Ohio- Steubenville High School Gang Rape posted on line a few days ago), Prison systems, War-Zones and Refugee Camps..are some of the places where there are highest number of sexual assaults take place. *In poor neighborhoods..in India or US (assume other places)..individual rapes are perhaps at the same-similar numbers..but, gang rape is actually less in numbers (all generalizations).
In the US..the numbers of Military rapes are so high..they actually had to amend laws:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/05/abortion-military-rape-jeanne-shaheen_n_2244668.html
In a historic bipartisan vote on Tuesday, the Senate passed Sen. Jeanne Shaheen's (D-N.H.) amendment to the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act that would extend abortion insurance coverage to victims of rape in the military. If the House of Representatives decides to include the measure in its version of the defense bill, military servicewomen who have become pregnant from rape will no longer have to pay out of pocket for an abortion procedure for the first time since 1981.
*Why abortion-reproductive rights should be different for women who were raped/why should women who serve in the military get special exceptions is a different question/discussion (just that is again- exposes selective outrage/compassion/rights etc).
*I don't agree with the "sexual repression" theory..in College Campuses and in most places in the world..plenty of sexual freedom and "consensual sex" are freely- easily available..but rapes/sexual assaults occur all the time, and sexual urges have something to do with rapes-gang rapes..but it is mostly it's about control, exerting power and aggresssion (and anger).
*Also from the accused perspective..I also know quite a few accused-offenders who are totally innocent..usually from slums and poor neighborhoods in the India/US who are innocent and are accused of crimes..because of police intimidation..even confess to crimes they have not committed. Many of you may be aware of the sensational New York Central Park Jogger gang rape..where years later (12 years later)..the accused were found to be totally innocent.

Finally, nothing about non-consensual sex is funny..jokes about assaulting a woman - getting her drunk, using date rape drugs, chloroform or other chemicals is not "normal", imo. It is normal/not unusual for "normal" people to have strange fantasies..pass lewd/offensive comments occasionally- one can give them a pass, say something to disagree (if it's an younger person- not a bad idea to give them a lecture too, they may become defensive..but, believe me..most younger men are sensible and will at least think about it later, if they feel the advice is genuine) and move on. But patterns are obsessions..and it is "unhealthy" to continue to engage in repetitive conversations with anyone who degrades women.
Yes, as women, we are very capable of making our decisions..speaking for myself, am..still open/grateful for genuine advice/warnings from anyone about anyone for my own self-protection and well being.

Advices are always a good thing. But all lost if the entire context is not seen. I don't believe in wasting my energies and advising anyone if I think that I don't know everything and if I don't think thay there is any harm going to happen, and specially of the person is my related to me in any way. Once I start digging and finding stuff then I start customizing my advice to the situation. Else it's just a futile exercise in digging dry wells.

In other words it is to be considered acceptable for a man to publicly claim that his fantasy is to rape a woman after making her unconscious using chloroform. Would you be ok if your husband used this line on another woman?

Any online character is not my husband. If a family member or close friend did it then of course I will handle it differently.
This is like asking, 'Rashmun, will you fuck your wife or will you fuck any woman you see?' Are you competing for Guinness book of world records for 'maximum idiotic questions asked'?

The analogy here is with the lewd lyrics of Honey Singh which celebrated rape and violence against women. After the recent outcry Honey had to disown his obscene songs. He will probably never sing an obscene song again.

What do you get?
Apparently, lots of other people find that chloroform meme funny. According to you, are they all "abnormal"?

So a singer singing obscene songs to earn from music industry, publishing and selling his stuff is the same as some bus driver brutally raping and killing a woman is the same as some online poster passing time with women who he may or may not know in real life. Analogies indeed. Who all do we wanna add in this analogy list?

Glorification of rape and violence against women even in songs encourages aberrant and misogynstic behavior. Molesting women starts being considered a macho thing to do. Outlook magazine published an article titled 'Poisonous Honey' in which it argued this point. Vir Sanghvi, writing in Hindustan Times, argued the same. I gave links to both the articles on the Bittu thread.

a comparison of honey singh's lyrics with lewd jokes is not in order. honey singh's lyrics are pedantic. jokes like the chloroform-joke are not. honey singh's pedantry, which verges on chauvinism, should be booked as it is being. even though only a fraction of honey singh's listeners enjoy his music for the lyrics alone (ironically, as one reporter in tehelka had pointed out, although honey singh's message, in the song, was that girls should not use dope, the video was suggestive of otherwise!), while the rest do for just the music, that, probably, is enough reason to shut him up.Rashmun wrote:Bittu wrote:Maria S wrote:

Poisonous Honey
While anti-rape protests rightly take the government to task for better policing and changes in law, perhaps it is also time to introspect on the sort of lyrics that are being promoted in the name of irreverence and 'youth culture'
GAUTAM CHINTAMANI
Perhaps it is free speech that allows someone who came up with lyrics such as Ch***ey key baad tujhe jutey maroon (Beat you with my shoe after I f**k you) to get away with it.

And this:
Mumbai: Bhangra-pop singer-rapper Honey Singh claims he is a victim of a vicious smear campaign launched by his rivals to finish off his rising career as India's foremost live entertainer.
Shaken and nonplussed, Honey didn't know what hit him when, on Monday hours before the new year was ushered in with telling somberness, he was targeted viciously for his allegedly anti-woman misogynist songs, especially a number offensively titled 'Main Hoon Ek Balaatkari'.
The song's title and "message" have offended a nation reeling under the impact of the heinous gang-rape in Delhi that took the victim's life last week.
A virulent campaign to boycott Honey Singh and his music was launched on several micro-blogging sites. An FIR was also lodged against Honey for obscenity in Lucknow. To top it all, on New Year's eve Honey's proposed concert in Gurgaon had to be cancelled due to pressures from the outside.
Fearing for his life, in a startling revelation made exclusively to this writer Honey Singh claims the offensive song is not his at all.
"I swear on my music, I've neither written nor sung those offensive songs. I'd never dream of singing a song in praise of rape. The thought is nauseating to me. I'd rather give up singing than attain popularity in such cheap and cheesy ways," he said.
"I respect women...What I am going through is another form Of rape," Honey Singh said.
Honey says the song has been released on the internet by an imposter. "I've sent notices to Youtube and other websites which have uploaded the offensive number. I am shocked that such a song could even be believed to be mine. I come from a family where women are respected. And I'd never disrespected women by espousing rape."
Honey also claims that the other obscene song entitled "Ch..t" which has been floating on the internet for years under his name is not his.
"I completely disown both these obscene numbers. I've nothing to do with them. My lawyers are trying to find out who's doing this to malign me. I'm being targeted for a rape of another kind altogether. What is being done to me is among the lowest of violation of human dignity," he said.

Re: so you thought rapists were mostly slum dogs
Journalist Seema Goswami directly linked the lyrics to violence agaist women to as she wrote, "All those telling us to *ignore* Honey Singh's *rape rap* do remember that this kind of misogyny is what results in violence against women." Nilanjana Roy posted a link to the petition, tweeting: Why women don't want to celebrate the new year with Honey Singh: Neha Kaul's petition...
Renowned journalist and Rude Food columnist Vir Sanghvi called for a strong boycott against the hotel if they didn't called the show off. He wrote on his Twitter wall: For God's sake, Bristol Hotel. Cancel the Honey Singh show. Are you guys in the rape business or the hotel business?
He later added, "If the Bristol does not cancel the Honey Singh show then I would urge every decent Indian to boycott the hotel."
Comedian Tanmay Bhat said, "Bringing Honey Singh into this discussion is giving his songs too much dignity. They're offensive to every sensibility and not just women."
....
So what exactly is the hullabaloo about? On his way to stardom he has penned some seriously lewd lyrics earning him the horrendous nickname - Rape Rapper. There's a song by the name of Main Hoon Balaatkari to his credit, then there's another one called, well read it for yourselves:
The lyrics of the song C***:
Aja teri ch*** maroon
Tere sir se chu**** ka bhoot utaroon
Cho**** key baad tujhe jutey maroon
Tere mooh main apna l*** dey key mo*** maroon (yeah)
The literal translation of the song roughly comes to this:
Come, I'll f*** you,
Exorcise you of the ghost of getting f*****,
After f****** you, I'll hit you with a shoe,
I'd put my d*** in your mouth, and then p*** on you
Yes, those are the lyrics of the song and the video features skimpily clad women who look all to happy to oblige Mr Honey Singh. After reading it we hope you will sign the petition, which had garnered 742 supporters when we last checked has been going viral on the social networking sites.

The lyrics of this song of Honey Singh bears a striking resemblance to some of the things Bittu has said earlier. The words seem to spring from the same mindset: women are objects.

I'd put my d*** in your mouth, and then p*** on you

The lyrics of this song of Honey Singh bears a striking resemblance to some of the things Bittu has said earlier. The words seem to spring from the same mindset: women are objects.

good he is being attacked.

Neither. I give the post in its entirety and i am highlighting the last line for your benefit.
---
Journalist Seema Goswami directly linked the lyrics to violence agaist women to as she wrote, "All those telling us to *ignore* Honey Singh's *rape rap* do remember that this kind of misogyny is what results in violence against women." Nilanjana Roy posted a link to the petition, tweeting: Why women don't want to celebrate the new year with Honey Singh: Neha Kaul's petition...
Come, I'll f*** you,
Exorcise you of the ghost of getting f*****,
After f****** you, I'll hit you with a shoe,
I'd put my d*** in your mouth, and then p*** on you

i am averse to start banning things using the arm of govt censorship in general. i don't know about this chut singh because i haven't paid much attention to him. however, i am certainly not averse to a PR campaign (involving no physical threats) that shames such "artistes" to reconsider.

That is precisely what Vir Singhvi is saying:
I could go on. I could tell you that one reason why women are routinely molested in our cities is because popular culture sometimes suggests that this is a macho and entirely acceptable sort of thing to do. But then, I imagine you know that already.
So finally, here’s my message. We are not moral policemen. We don’t want bans on all sexual content. But as citizens of India, we have the right to protest against those who glorify rape and violence against women.
And, in the aftermath of the Delhi gang rape, we would be failing in our duties as citizens, if we did not protest.

Re: so you thought rapists were mostly slum dogs
But there is a third category of objection. And it is one that I subscribe to. Popular culture must never be used to incite anger, hatred or violence. To see how offensive Honey Singh’s lyrics are just imagine that he was singing not about a woman but about assaulting a Dalit or a tribal. All of us would be appalled and would immediately demand action against him. No civilised society can approve of popular culture in which performers urge their audiences to go out and commit rape, assault or other kinds of sick violence. The problem with Honey Singh’s lyrics is not that they are lewd. It is that they are a celebration of sexual violence and rape.

Re: so you thought rapists were mostly slum dogs
Truth be told, I was only dimly aware that Honey Singh existed. But when I saw the online petition asking the Bristol to call off the show and read the tweets from Nilanjana Roy, Raheel Khursheed and others, I was sufficiently intrigued to check out the lyrics of Honey Singh’s songs.
What I found was truly shocking. I am not one of those who minds sexual references in popular culture so I was not offended by the sexual content of the lyrics. What outraged me was that one of the songs was written from the perspective of a rapist and glorified the manner in which he intended to humiliate women, to urinate in their mouths and to assault them.
