He grew up in a city in the eastern part of India which used to be capital of the British India. He went to a Jesuit college which is very selective. It has produced many intellectuals and government bureaucrats. He majored in a field which is considered to be a social science that analyzes the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. GRE and TOEFL was a breeze. Getting a graduate fellowship at a fairly well known state university was no big deal either.

One thing that set apart Bala from others was his penchant for discipline. He was strict about what he ate, when he ate and where he ate, when he went to bed, the posture while sleeping, the time he woke up etc. He shared the apartment near the university campus in the east coast with couple of desis. Being a natural leader, he was able to impose his ways on them. He made sure that the roommates did their share of their chores to keep the apartment clean.

The smart guy got his Ph.D in four years. He taught for a while. And then moved on and became a consultant. He was able to work from his apartment and make a ton of money.

He was in his late twenties. Time to get married was now. That is what the family astrologer told his mother back home. Of course Bala had great faith in astrology. He thought it was a science. The family found a girl whose horoscope was a perfect match. Both liked each other. And she had a Ph.D from Indian Institute of Science. Bala was back in America with his beautiful bride.

What I meant was he did not have any honarary PhD awarded by an Indian University....I always knew he had a PhD.....
