The Oscar Nominations 2013
The Oscar Nominations announced today:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/08/oscars-nominations-2013_n_2435207.html
Like the host- Seth McFarlane:)
Have not seen most of the movies, which have been nominated.
Have not heard about this movie before..Will certainly get lots of attention
with the Oscar nomination now..May not win any Oscar, but from the trailer seems like..my kind
of movie:) Simple story about the human spirit..lots of nature, wild beasts..great original musical score..hush puppies..look forward to watching it.

Re: The Oscar Nominations 2013
Looks like Pi has 11 nominations..got to win something!
I did not think that it was an extraordinary movie (above average)..thought the same about Lincoln.
Frankly..award winning movies..are often not my favs. As you know..there is so much power/internal politics in the Cinema world(s) ..people like to snub, elevate folks for reasons of their own..somewhat like the BEST minds anywhere..which play/enjoy games-only in this case..careers of artists and lots of money is involved!

Re: The Oscar Nominations 2013
Pi was the right amount of cerebral for me and I am a sucker for stories as long as they don't involve mausi, maamaaji, kaakaa and ram ram.
I also liked Silver Linings Playbook. The artiste formerly known as Katniss turned in a bravo performance as did Bradley Cooper. I think Hugh Jackman will nudge him out though. There are natural and invisible advantages to playing a character longitudinally over time.
ps. Avoid Thaandavam if you are ever offered - stayed up till 2.30 am and all i have is a hangover.

"Right amount of cerebral for me"..sounds quite familiar to me..in whole different contexts!
Sorry- don't know what "mausi, maamaaji, kaakaa and ram ram" means!
Thanks for the suggestion about Thaandavam.
Hearing a lot of buzz about Vishvaroopam- Kamal and his decision to change the movie industry (distribution, release etc). I am not sure..have mixed views about it..will have to see- how his bet/risk-taking turns out.

Re: The Oscar Nominations 2013
Kamal should stop digging - he is in an acting hole already. Or do characters after focus-testing like Balram Naidu. With his quant solution to the movie revenues maximization problem he is not going to win a star on the Vadapalani sidewalk/plaatphoram. Just fade already!

Amour (n):
General received wisdom - Complex bundling of all positive emotions one can feel towards another
My prediction for Haneke's take on it - True proof of amour is in dying together.
I want to see it too!

Can anyone suggest if "Lincoln" is not PG related for a 10 year old.

SI,
In my view..it's not appropriate for 10-year old children..there are some graphic images and language.
It's also a looong movie..felt like 3 hours, even as someone who lives in the South..and is very interested in American History (esp. Civil war and Civil Rights roots-movement)..it was quite tiring for me.

Re: The Oscar Nominations 2013
I like the picks for best picture and best director. I still have to watch Beasts, Amour, Zero Dark Thirty and Les Miserables.
Lincoln gets into the gory details of the legislative process, and it is longer than it needed to be. My wife thought she didn't get as much out of it, because she wasn't familiar with the historical details prior to watching the movie. I suspect it will win at least one, perhaps more, of the three: picture, director, actor.

Speaking of Lincoln..
It does not take a history expert to say..what a great historical figure he was and his compelling personal life story..and Daniel Day-Lewis is great in the role (great casting)..he is an amazing actor..Was just reading that he turned down the role first..
http://movies.yahoo.com/blogs/2013-oscars/daniel-day-lewis-breakup-letter-steven-spielberg-203022665.html
*Apart from the movie..it's so nice to see people really "write real letters"..these days, esp. when they don't have to, and they still take the time and write the most thoughtful letters..like Daniel. In a world where there is so much cynicism, time spent with people is merely time pass or unimportant..refreshing indeed.
In my experiences, most Americans (how young or how old) still- always send thank you cards and letters, which is nice..good manners, imo.

The problem is people already know a lot about Lincoln (his life, presidency and troubles..) before going to see the movie about him.
Re: The Oscar Nominations 2013
I didnt/dont care for most of the nominated films. I was really surprised by Amour. I love Haneke's work & have seen almost all of his films except the castle & 71 Fragments. Will watch it on 18th as soon as I get back home.

Re: The Oscar Nominations 2013
I've to share this experience about Beasts of southern wild. I watched it at a special screening. They searched people with metal detectors and made me leave cellphone & bag(I had my laptop, I was going to a meeting after the screening) in car. Apparently Fox searchlight pictures wanted the organizers to do that. Bastards!!

>>>I may watch it this weekend. I think I can sit thru 3 hours, considering the subject matter. We'll see.

Re: The Oscar Nominations 2013
There are plenty of people..who give this movie 5 stars (and possibly the Oscar), you may too.
* I am not a Steven Spielberg (as a Director) fan..try to keep an open mind..I really liked some of his movies a lot like- Jaws, Jurassic Park (amazing- 5 stars)..and really disliked movies like ET, Saving Private Ryan (2 stars)..
Lincoln, Color Purple..and a few others..3-4 stars.

one of the very few movies that elicits tears. to this day, the name spielberg doesn't make me remember ET or jurassic park or whatever, but SL. also ralph fiennes's best performance ever. the purists sometimes carp about cheap tactics to draw tears etc., but the purists can suck it.

Awww..Schindler's List, was more like a documentary to me, with some moving moments. Will give Spielberg 4 stars as a producer and 3 stars as the director.
