On the JEE again Empty On the JEE again

Post by Marathadi-Saamiyaar Tue May 31, 2011 12:43 pm

Usage of "sophisticated" words like Abrcadabra, anodying and cathodying made me wonder:

Very very few engineers move up high enough to write/oversee detailed reports and letters at the highest level. Even then, the letters are meant to be understood by normally educated people. Then where is the need to "screw" the students with high level Ingliss at the JEE, GRE, MCAT, etc ???

Doesn't this emphasis on English put the non-english medium 12th graders in India at a clear disadvantage. Won't that miss some really brilliant students from being identified?

I bet Einstein and Ramanujan would have flunked JEE big time by not making the necessary cutoffs in the non-math sections.

Time to get rid of the JEE. This year I heard TN is basing admissions purely on the common 12th std exams - and not separate entrance exams. That puts all students on a level playing field - mostly.

I was watching some TED videos over the weekend, while waiting at the mall for the wife to finish shopping. One of them was an English teacher who argued the same point. Look it up... quite a nice speech by the lady.

You are taking Swamiji's words too literally. JEE hasn't had an English paper for the last 20 years at least. We just had an English test after enrolling... where we had to write an essay on any topic. Those who failed had to take a "remedial English" class. I was tempted to write an essay on The Cow, but I wrote one on The Bicycle instead.

What percentage of IIT seats are reserved for non-competition kids. And who comprises the non-competition communities?

There are no non-competition seats. There are reserved seats for SCs and STs, based on JEE ranks within those communities. Off the top of my head, I think the SC quota was 15% and the ST quota 10%. (I could be wrong on details, but overall in the right ballpark I think.) When I was there, there were no OBC quotas, but I know there has been some clamor for OBC quotas at IITs lately.

>>>> Or for that matter on the SAT! I have been looking at my son's prep material and can't figure out when he is going to use many of the words ever. I have done detailed presentations for CxO's, Boards of Directors and also communicate regularly with customers from all walks of life and name of the game is really simplicity.

Now I have. Back in the day, there was no internet, so my general knowledge was much more limited. But I still had the idea of writing that English essay about the randomest topic I could find. I looked out the window, saw a bicycle, and wrote my essay about the bicycle. One of the contributions of the bicycle that I highlighted in my essay was its role in training the Wright brothers to be good engineers.

Not really... I was studying to be an aerospace engineer, and I had just spent a summer reading about the Wright Brothers, George Cayley, Otto Lilienthal, etc.
