Gogo internet - ripoff
They charged me $20 for two hours of internet access on a five hour flight. But the connection is so slow, Netflix won't work. What a ripoff!
This used to be $10 for the entire flight and Netflix used to work. May be it's US Airways that is to blame.

It is quite bad that they increased the price and made it per hour.
However, the data rate issue is a function of the number of users at the same time.
One Scenario, which can account for the difference,
The last time you used it, there were just two of you allowing a typical MPEG streaming to work. This time, with so many folks having IPads/Tablets, the per user bandwidth could have been become restricted.

Yeah, I think more people are using the service on flights these days. But $10/hr is just too much. If they charge that much, they should at least have some level of service that they can guarantee -- perhaps by telling you after more than a certain number have signed in that the network is too busy.

It's official. Gogo has increased their prices. I am on a United flight now, and they charged me $20 again for two hours of internet access. And Netflix won't work! This is a big time ripoff.

I see your first post has been given a negative rating.
There must be some US Airways employee on SuCH.

The airplane you're on is like a fucking tower beaming up a signal to satellites for internet connection. The only problem is that there are only a handful of subscribers for that service as opposed to hundreds of thousands on the ground. The airline is probably losing money in providing you internet service 30k feet up in the sky and you're bitching about $10/hour being a ripoff?

Thank you, that does help. I guess, as rawemotions said earlier, the number of users has gone up while the pipe hasn't gotten any bigger. I just wish they had a limit on number of active connections so customers don't feel cheated after paying up.

GOGO uses a wide range of technologies. It includes Terrestrial as well as Satellite based ATG communication.
This is from their website.
Air-to-Ground (ATG): With a proven track record of performance, reliability, and scalability, Gogo’s ATG-based service will continue to provide a rich user experience for connected travelers by featuring 3G wireless utilizing EV-DO Rev. A.
ATG-4: Gogo’s ATG-4 service will significantly enhance the existing ATG network and improve per aircraft capacity by approximately four times current performance through the addition of Directional Antenna, Dual Modem, and EV-DO Rev. B technologies. ATG-4 is scheduled for commercial delivery in 2012. This new platform is backwards compatible and allows for upgrades to existing ATG systems through low cost retrofits.
Ka-band satellite/Global Coverage: Gogo was named a service provider for Inmarsat’s Global Xpress™ satellite service in November, 2011. Inmarsat has also selected Gogo’s business aviation subsidiary, Aircell, as a distribution partner for the business and government aviation markets.
Working with Inmarsat, Gogo will begin in-flight testing of the Global Xpress aeronautical services after the launch of the first Inmarsat-5 satellite, which is scheduled for mid-2013. Gogo plans to offer Ka-satellite service in the 1st quarter of 2015. Inmarsat’s Global Xpress service will allow Gogo to utilize the first global Ka-band solution, which is expected to bring significantly improved performance to the global aero market in terms of coverage, capacity and cost.
