Muthuswami Dikshitar and Srinivasa Ramanujan
In an earlier post Max claims that Muthuswami dikshitar (md)'s stay in Benares should be considered on par with a sabbatical of a scholar. After all Dikshitar had already learnt Carnatic music before he went to Benares. the problem with this argument is that one takes a sabbatical for six months or an year or even two years, but in this case MD spent seven years in Benares learning music.
In my opinion a better analogy is with the great tamil mathematician Ramanujan going to England to study higher mathematics. The full blossoming of Ramanujan's genius was only possible after his stay in England and interactions with great mathematicians like Hardy and Littlewood. This is not to deny that Ramanujan was already knowledgeable in the branch of mathematics he specialized in.

Another point to note: except for one composition in Telugu and another which is in a combination of tamil, Telugu, and Sanskrit, all compositions of Dikshitar are in Sanskrit. What does this imply?
In my opinion by composing nearly all his songs in Sanskrit he was showing the middle finger to those who claim only the South Indian states have joint ownership over his music.

The fact that Dikshitars claim to be descendants of immigrants from Kashmir may have something to do with this.

yeah.. the rules for sabbatical have not changed over centuries.
you say 'full blossoming..'- even Hardy himself wasn't sure about that...
Give it a watch : either the 'run lola run' or even the pathetic thamizh version of the same '12B' - would help the quality of your errr....what you call speculations be more informed.

Ramanujan did his best work literally on his death bed. This was when he came up with the Mock Theta functions when he had the full force of his collaboration with Hardy, Littlewood, and others behind him.

Re: Muthuswami Dikshitar and Srinivasa Ramanujan
it is interesting to note that Hardy was a Master of seven different branches of mathematics. Ramanujan's expertise lay in just one of these branches (strictly speaking a sub-branch of one of these branches). And yet Ramanujan is more famous today than Hardy.

The message:
SIs become famous only after they go elsewhere. Dikshitar became famous because he went to UP. If Ramanujam went to UP rather than to UK, he would have been even more famous.
Those two SIs were not really SIs. Dikshitars came to SI from Kashmir! Ramanujam's ancestors came from UP!
So, SI is inferior to NI. Hindians zindabad!
Hope KV is following Rashmun's threads.
