Post by truthbetold Thu Feb 28, 2013 6:32 am

Usa has higher % of people collecting food stamps today than ever?
usa - less number of us citizens are involved in innovation today than in the past?
usa - more of us corporations are owned by non us entities( implication may be non european entities).

Can you help collect facts and trend analysis on these questions.
Thanks in advance.

May be some of the info you are seeking can be googled. For example, the food stamp data -

Then again, I think I made a boo-boo. Supplemental nutritional assistance may not be food stamps. It could be something else like school lunches or something. Can't believe 46 million people are on food stamps in for the most recent year in the data.

TBT,

*Am not an expert on Economics and Fed. Assistance programs!

Here is some info on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) : (one actually says that the numbers may go down in 2013).

1. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10000872396390443989204577601332200760406.html

"Today the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as food stamps, feeds one in seven Americans. The program was established in 1939 by FDR's then Secretary of Agriculture Henry Wallace. Recipients are not all lazy bums sitting on their posteriors watching "The Jerry Springer Show." Most of them have jobs and only stay on the program an average of nine months.

Mr. Obama's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act helped more needy families obtain food via the food-stamp program. And Moody's estimates that for every dollar in food-stamp money, $1.73 is circulated back into the economy. It was Democrats who fought to extend unemployment benefits during this difficult time. For every dollar in these benefits, the return is $1.64. The Recovery Act stimulus, 34% of which was tax cuts, included homelessness-prevention funds that allowed many Americans to stay where they were living or to quickly find new housing. It also provided them with job training."

2. Innovation
http://www.whitehouse.gov/administration/eop/nec/StrategyforAmericanInnovation

This would be a long-term strategic type of issue and would require a more detailed policy analysis on which administration dropped the ball, if your figures are right that less number of Americans are engaged in innovation.

3. Foreign ownership

http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/RS21857.pdf

Europe is still the largest shareholder. See commentary on conflicting theories on what is desirable about foreign ownership. Obama does a great a job of understanding the nuances of what "American interests" really mean.
