I was going to say that....with no kids he won't miss anything. In fact, if at all they want to split, it should be done before any kids arrive.
But, then most Docs - especially the dumbfuck super specialists - are so oblivious of other things around them (except medicine and money) he may realize only after she left. My guess is either he is a Mindless Doctor or super calculating in that she knows she ain't going leave all that money.
He will realize only after a couple of Blondes strip (out his bank accounts).

You two are missing the point...what do you recommend that the wife should do? Just suppress her personality and continue to live there feeling miserable? Whether he gets some small town gold digging pussy after she leaves is besides the point.

You may be right, but a person who is tone deaf to his partner's concerns can't be good for any one. Just because he makes a lot of money doesn't mean she can't complain anout her situation. She's made it clear that it is not as important to her as it is to him. From what she's posted, she sounds like a well educated person who is quite capable of something on her own. May be not big bucks, but that aspect can take a back seat when you are very unhapp.
From what I' ve seen people do tend to take up jobs in such small towns because they pay so well, but make enough dough for a few years, and move when kids come along or when they grow up a little.
OTOH, he might be better off with a trophy wife, and she might be better off in NYC.

You are in a very difficult situation. Can visualize a whole lot of things - ABCD, arranged marriage, caste importance, etc....
Marriage is a give and take. Sit down with your hoojband an have an open talk in a no non-sense mode so that he "understands" the consequences of his lethargic attitude. In a a marriage each one has to adjust but not have to sacrifice everything that one values.

Let's do this together. First, the speciality - what can be that super specialized speciality? EP guy? Gastroenterologist? No, strike that, lets narrow it down further to liver- hepatologist? Transplant nephrologist? But what is a transplant guy going to transplant in the middle of nowhere? Strike that as well. Maternal - Fetal medicine? You know with all those teen pregnancies. But teen pregnancies are really nothing- they deliver while sleeping or sitting on the potty, nothing high risk. Strike that as well.

Hold on. Aren't we jumping to conclusions about him, only from hearing one side of the strory. For all we know he may very well be dedicated & loves what he does. He is not the whining here or looking down at others living down there

That was so cute....
Perhaps, a Sleep specialist....
Sleep is one thing that I never have a problem with. These days I have even developed the ability to sleep at ANY time I want - just closing my eyes and leaning against my table or a wall. If you dont see me here day or night, it means I am sleeping...

Mainstreet 's choices seem to be:
stay and find life in that small city or
Miracle happens and she convinces her husband to move or
she moves
To my man's mind that is how it appears. I would like to read what other gender posters think.
Man's solution:
most people - stay and attempt to adjust. Result: misery.
Few bold people: take the plunge. Go find your way. Result: life is what you make. Good luck.

Re: Small Town Blues
I am certainly NOT going to stay here. I might as well be dead because my life is NOT worth living in this town. Not city. Town. I know my problems would probably sound First World-ish to some of the women with three or four kids in this town and they wouldn't mind being in my position. I just can't relate to anyone here and there is nothing to do.
As kind and compassionate as my husband is to his patients, he has always had blinders on when it comes to his focus on his vocation (and it is a calling or a vocation more than a job to him). He has given so much of his life to his education, training, and patients that he hasn't had the time for much else. No time for socializing, going to fancy restaurants, having any hobbies outside of an hour at the gym everyday. He just doesn't think location makes a huge difference because he is going to have an intense schedule wherever he is. If anything at all, he's relieved that he doesn't have to sell himself as a doctor. The patients come without any marketing or advertising on his part because they can't afford gas to drive two hours to the nearest small city and two hours back. He's their only choice and DH is glad for that.

One question: Didn't you know while agreeing to marry a Doctor you would not have these "normal" activities ? If you had grown up here - looks like it - you should have been smarter to know what to expect after marriage.
One more thing: Even women with 3 or 4 kids dream of all those things that you listed. Just that they are more realistic and husband and kids come first to them.

Do women with 3 or 4 kids in this town REALLY dream of moving to a more cosmopolitan place with more worldly people? These women don't come across as remotely worldly to me. They wouldn't know foie gras from fried chicken.

Mainstreet, do fill us in with your background. Country and/or state you grew up. Degree and/or field. And the most important question. Was yours a love marriage or an arranged marriage? Desi doctors mostly prefer to marry other doctors, imo. All other kinda matches usually suffer. Anyhoos, curious. Tough to fully empathize until we (I) know more background.

Oh I knew my husband for many years before we got married. His lifestyle had always been intensely busy and I knew it would continue to be intense. For most of our courtship, I was just as busy in my own career, hobbies, fitness, socializing. I never expected to end up in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do.

Oh please! There's nothing wrong with someone who loves to socialize, wear makeup, perfume (not overpowering at all), dress up, and look pretty. Get off your nerdy horse. My husband likes a woman who likes to talk and interact a lot with others. Besides, I also bring other things to our marriage. Vivaciousness, a sense of humor, warmth, intimacy, and a damn good cook.

He got a wee bit of doubt that you could be a north indian. Hence the caustic and sarcastic remarks. Take it easy! When did socializing become a vice!

Flimmy Iyer....agree with you for first time.
The most profitable business for a woman on earth is marriage. She can join a marriage with no qualification and absolutely no skills and yet enjoy all benefits, act like a CEO, with a hefty severance package if she decides to quit.
They bring only one thing to the Table...err...marriage....an oven...that too operated only at CEO's convenience.

how can you bring a sense of humour, etc., when you're complaining bitterly about the miserable life you live with your husband in a boring place? your husband can hire a better cook than you any day if he wants to, or eat at good restaurants every day, where the owners won't complain and will serve him cheerfully.mainstreet wrote:I also bring other things to our marriage. Hey, if we are really discussing the logistics of obtaining a good cook, I am sure he can import a cook from wherever in India his family is from. It will be a step up for the cook, and I am sure he can afford that.mainstreet wrote:What Michelin star restaurant is DH going to dine at in this hick town? If this a troll, I'd give it an A-. Good beginning, draw in posters with responses, gradual addition of more details to keep ppl engaged, and to keep the thread moving etc., but would have been better if OP was a wee bit less reticent and more confrontational. Looks like CD did try early on, but that didn't pick up much steam.

That reminds me of something. If you are a good cook, have you considered blogging? You could start with a cooking blog, or make it a lifestyle blog with how life is like in a hick town, a la The Pioneer Woman. That will suck up your time, keep you busy, and you will have an audience.

That shouldn't be a problem at all she seems smart and highly educated. In a BIG city someone would be willing to give her a chance, will offer a 6-figure paying job though she hasn't worked in 11 years; she will have no problem finding a cool metrosexual dude who is understanding and respects her, in other words everything will be hunky-dory.

The possibilities are endless. But, it is her life, she took her decision, now realizes wrong, and regrets. She can start all over and hopefully end up following a better road or an even more bumpy road.

hahaha. we are about 23 posts away from a gulti bihari missile.
key takeaways from this thread -
1. life is meaningless if you cannot stand in front of UN and world bank buildings and marvel at the rainbow delegations entering these buildings
2. life is pointless if you cannot have food originated in continent A for breakfast, food originated in continent B for lunch and food originated in continent C for dinner
3. it is possible for a medical professional to come home every night with a boat full of dollar bills in a town that has one diner and no starbucks

mainstreet standing at the crawford and 8th avenue saying "ah, look at that japanese gentleman entering the UN building with an official from Niger. ahh, look at these two gentlemen and a lady who follow them. ahhh, one of them is from Saudi and the other two are from Canada. ahhhh, look at the dashing clooney lookalike who follows them with an attractive swagger and an air of importance. ahhhhh, look at the british hero showering his british charm on the steps of the UN building. ahhhhhh, look at that building. look at it. ahhh. just look at it. ahhhhhhh. if there is a heaven, then it's right at crawforn and 8th."

Nah, can't be Persepolis. She was dating a gora, if I remember correctly. Even if it turned out that he was a bearded non-IT/non-lawyer loser type more interested in malodorous, sweaty social arts hussies, I still can't see her marrying a desi workoholic medicine-man. This would indeed be a very steep fall if indeed it's Perse.

Go on and mock. What will you third-world peasants know about how cosmopolitan it feels to be in the same 1-mile radius as all these UN delegates??
