Five years ago, he came to Washington and gave a performance. In spite of all the health problems, he was still active. And he narrated many stories about his life in cine world. He expressed great regard for poet Kannadasan, and singer Janaki. Quite a gentleman.

He had a Unique voice not easily replicated much like Mukesh. TMS for his versatility and popularity, others can sing like TMS. I used to get confused a bit between PBS and AM Raja (his predecessor) long time back.

Vasudevan started his career as a singer cum actor in Tamil drama troupes in Malaysia and later moved to Madras to pursue his career in singing. Since he could sound like T M Soundarajan, he was taken by Paavalar Brothers, the troupe formed by Ilayaraja and his brothers even before the composer had entered the industry as a music director.

saar ! please.. malaysia vasudevan sings soft and does not have the upper range - he could never have sung anything even 70% close to TMS , even any one of his many modulations- MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, JaiShankar, Ravichandran. BTW, have you ever tried playing a game of switching one for another of these four in your mind and test it out? you will be amazed.

Sorry you have your view...and I have my view...Hence I showed an independent view. It says he COULD sound like TMS. Sure TMS was versatile and could modulate blah blah and more blah....not denying any of that.
Who could sound like P B S ? That was my point.

PBS had a sweet voice. I agree, he was somewhat like AM Raja.
May he RIP.

You left out actor Ahokan, a perfect gentleman.

ok...parse the sentense carefully - the one from 2009 paper.
TMS was too busy and monopolizing the industry. new directors like IL Raja were looking for someone ELSE who appears like TMS and they used Malaysia vasudevan. He did not prove to be TMS equivalent in skills and abilities and range and hence no one "compared" him to TMS.
The question here was "is there anyone with a voice like PBS" answer is NO. Was there anyone with voice like TMS The answer to that - per newspaper and directors in the 70s - is yes.
That is all your honor.
P.S. Actually, PBS was a kind of replacement for AM Raja, when he was fading away fast. I like Raja-Jikki pair.

"I like Raja-Jikki pair."
Me too. Raja was great in Missamma. Jikki sang better in Tamil or Telugu Anarkali than Lata in Hindi Anarkali.

kuppura vizhundhAlum...meesai irukka mudalae? the question is what do YOU think - was malaysia vasudevan anywhere close to TMS ?
talk about monopoly - until RahmAn surfaced, only a few singers dominated and almost suffocated.. it was much worse in bollywood actually; of course recycle raja monopolized as well, until the fresh ARR breeze embraced both north and south; now there is so much variety

Where did I say Malaysia vasudevan is anywhere close to TMS. read my post AGAIN. I stated it CLEARLY already. I was just talking about hte voice... you extrapolated it to TMS skills and voice range, blah blah... which was not the issue at all.

Bill Gates copied, Steve Jobs copied and so many others copied. See, copying is an art and not for everyone. Out of billions of people on earth...only few can copy and innovate. Innovation sets them apart.
