There seems to be a significant amount of rhinestone studding going on in the said shirt / convertible lengha / kurti. My ingratiation sensor is on high alert.

I am out of touch - men wear kurti these days? rhinestone encrusted sandals too?

He soon switched into a green coat that must be made from a pattu pavadai (silk skirt that lil girls wear), followed by a Dracula like cloak.

didnt notice the sandals. but hey impy wants all of us to focus on charukesi - not on his wardrobe!
(besides the point that i thought charukesi = impy's pet name for charvaka)

Ah, the song, the raagam yes, yes.

Hard to focus on charukesi with all these more interesting distractions - never mind that I wouldn't know charukesi if it hit me in the face.

"etho etho nenjil nuzhaikirathu blah blah blah". Way too cutesy/mushy/screechy - Rejected.

The first song "Udhaya, Udhaya" has the dude performing some strange dance steps. Looks to be in great pain.

You should do reviews of desi movies. You have a way of cyclops ing desi movies. I usually go Shocked in such circumstances.

lol @ extra-fitting. Been awhile since I heard that slang.

Do Indians really like these kinds of song picturizations? Blatant item songs do bring in ticket buying audiences. I am excusing those. But I feel these type of B-grade picturizations of A-grade music and beautiful actresses is a HUGE waste. Often the exaggerated expressions and movements of the actresses takes away from the true sexuality they are capable of expressing. This is literally the Indian version of bad professional porn where the obvious exaggerated expressions of the actors makes it look more funny and pathetic than sexy and arousing.

I bet I could remake the same songs with the same actresses, without any exaggerated expressions and abrupt dance movements, to bring out the true sensuous expressions of the artists and have every single person in the audience get a little warmer with excitement.

This has been an age old problem in Indian movie songs. There are numerous songs where the composition, instrumentation, singing and lyrics were ahead of their time, but when you finally see the picturization it sucks beyond words. Only lately, there has been some improvements.

Best example of beautiful picturization AFAIK is the song from Alai Payuthey *pachai nirame*.

All I have to say is that I find this virtual akka/behna/anna-ing very disturbing. TS wouldn't approve of it as well.

I will focus if you post a proper charukesi carnatic piece - all these unbearably mushy songs involving men wearing dresses and necklaces, bawling "uyireeeeee" takes away the focus.

b.wock: you underestimate the power of cinema music to creatively explore carnatic music ideas. i too don't usually like the picturization, but tune off and just listen to the music.

anyway if you want a classical piece in c.keshi my favorite is lalgudi jayaraman's varNam. the most lilting vocal version i've heard was at a house concert by saketa raman a young and upcoming musician.

youtube doesn't have too many good versions, but this one is adequate:

oh, some of us are able to set aside the unbearable mushiness and enjoy the song because it is a beautiful composition so wonderfully set in charukesi. its not always about you. one cannot but appreciate the genius of the music director in incorporating a carnatic music raagam into a cine song....

Thanks, Max and Impy. I will listen to these soon.

I know that there are several movie songs (hindi and tamil) based on classical ragas/concepts but it takes a lot of effort for me to look beyond the lyrics and the high pitched laments on love, sacrifice and other such sentiments and appreciate just the music. I can switch off the video but can't get past the cheesy lines easily. Also, I am not knowledgeable enough to identify ragas and so this aspect is largely lost on me.

That said, I must say that I prefer listening to things in their pure form - if I want to listen to Charukesi, I would rather listen to the real deal.

Lastly, it is very hard to resist making fun of Tamil/Hindi movies and their unbearable melodrama and cheesiness.

I looked up other compositions in Charukesi and found a piece that I am very familiar with from my childhood days (#1 in the list)
