Close. Missing a letter to make complete sense. You need to explain the answer.

It's not a homophone. More like clue within clue.

Oops, should be 9. Indo deserves credit for his answer then. Medi(T)ated is correct.

ANCESTRY ( anag of ASCENT + RY(railway?))
10. Roughly seeing lump inside fits medically-speaking [8]
EPILEPSY (PILE inside anagram of ESPY?)
i thought of this but wasn't expecting an anagram of a synonym and ruled it out.

Both are correct. Ry is occasionally used although RR is more common. When I was setting up "epilepsy" I mistook it to be e(pile)spy and only later saw my mistake! So added "roughly" to eke out a solution to my dilemma!

Re: THURSDAY CRYPTICS 6/6/2013
I look at the cryptics and wonder how does some random sentence indicate another word. I tried solving after looking at the solutions but find them impossibly tough.
Can anyone shed some light on how to solve the cryptics?

I'll wait for Indo to answer your question. He had posted a detailed explanation to help novices in the past. Once you get the hang of it, Yogi, you will begin to levitate from your lotus position purely from the enjoyment of solving them.

I did one but Mohita did a really nice tutorial in the old Sulekha. May be yours and bw's sets could lure her in again. I saw Churi post something here a few months back. Who knows! May be we will have more people trying to solve these things soon. As for Yogi, I tried digging up those old tutorials from Sulekha, but no luck. May be the following link is a simple enough place to start.

Thanks, Indo, for giving yogi a link. He may get intimidated just by reading the explanation but my advice to him is, in addition to knowing what "homophones", "anagrams", "components", "truncations" etc are, to firsts look up the solutions to cryptics from the past SuCH sets and deciphering how each one is coined and solved. It's fun to crack them once you get the hang of it.
