I'll wait for Indo to answer your question. He had posted a detailed explanation to help novices in the past. Once you get the hang of it, Yogi, you will begin to levitate from your lotus position purely from the enjoyment of solving them. Wink

I did one but Mohita did a really nice tutorial in the old Sulekha. May be yours and bw's sets could lure her in again. I saw Churi post something here a few months back. Who knows! May be we will have more people trying to solve these things soon. As for Yogi, I tried digging up those old tutorials from Sulekha, but no luck. May be the following link is a simple enough place to start.

Thanks indophile. I'll go through the link.

Thanks, Indo, for giving yogi a link. He may get intimidated just by reading the explanation but my advice to him is, in addition to knowing what "homophones", "anagrams", "components", "truncations" etc are, to firsts look up the solutions to cryptics from the past SuCH sets and deciphering how each one is coined and solved. It's fun to crack them once you get the hang of it.
Yeah it was intimidating going through the explanation part. Let's see what i've figured out.
every cryptic clue follows the rule definition + wordplay. wordplay leads to a solution indirectly. the sentence shouldn't be read as a whole as a phrase but consider each word.
Is there anything else that i need to know? I'll go through the previous cryptics and try solving them.

ps: i'm not good at vocabulary. will that be a impediment in solving the cryptics?

Just like the best way to learn swimming is to jump into the pool, I suggest that you review older cryptic sets and solutions to figure out how each one was solved. You can use on-line thesaurus/dictionary as an aid to help with vocabulary.
