The ugly breeders? Empty The ugly breeders?

Post by Seva Lamberdar Sat Jun 22, 2013 10:22 am

This morning (June 22nd) there was a news-item on the NBC morning TV about the ugliest dog contest. It seems some people may be intentionally mixing several dissimilar breeds of dogs to create "ugly" puppies so they can have them take part later in the "ugliest" dog contests and win top prizes. Are the TV "nutworks" inadvertently encouraging this type of irresponsible ugly breeding through "ugliest" promotions / contests?

It's a choice between being the creator of a thing of beauty or ugliness. These people are intentionally creating "pets" whom nobody will want or love, other than perhaps being entered in a contest for the title of ugliest dog and be humiliated and pitied that way.

Isn't ugliness in the eyes of the beholder?

How many people on "Such" do you think would like to adopt the dog as a pet which just won the title in the ugliest dog contest?

and many Suchers, who commented after seeing the picture of that dog, called it lovely (beautiful) and not ugly. That means people did take its beautiful looks into consideration.

There is probably a long tail of interested folks in the so-called 'ugly dogs'. my point is beauty/ugliness are less normative than other objective criteria.

You are missing the point. The breeders of dogs in this case are intentionally trying to enhance and reinforce the "ugliness" in the offspring by choosing very dissimilar breeds of "parents". It's like someone, instead of growing flowers into his vacant land and have a lovely garden, decides to create a mess full of dishavelled grass.

Question is does one love the dog less because it is "ugly"? When something is 'yours', you will grow to love it. And it need not matter whether the rest of the world 'loves' it as much or at all. This is true of puppies, babies, stuff and everything in between.

The "ugliness" in puppies in this case is not natural or accidental but deliberately induced. Moreover, most of the puppies bred these days are adopted or bought by others who take them home based on their looks and the first impression. There is very little chance that these puppies / dogs will find good and loving owners.
