I thought originally the Guptas were rulers. The Kshatriyas.

Igneous SIs... Guptas can be kshatriya, vaishya, or brahmin. It depends on their "self" (i.e. "guna") and its "activities" (i.e. "karma"). Most garden variety Guptajis are vaishyas. You occasionally encounter a self-proclaimed descendant of Samudra Gupta and Chandra Gupta "Vikramaditya" but those guys usually have grander titles.
