What was your first ...
alcoholic drink? How old were you then?
Mine was cognac. I was 12 and my cousin was 10. We pried open my dad's liquor cabinet and indulged. We got very sick after that. And never ventured near the cabinet afterwards. If my dad knew about it he didn't bring it up to us so barring a few sleepless nights we escaped punishment.

Scotch at 13 from my friend's dad's bottle. I took a small sip, and it felt like fire going down my throat.
3 years later I had a glass of beer in the stock room of a liquor store. Me and my friends quickly gulped down the drink and walked out as it was illegal to drink inside the store. After reaching home about 20-30 minutes later I felt a buzz and my legs felt rubbery.

Beer. 5-6 yrs old. I remember it vividly. Dad and uncles were having it. They poured a little for me. Just for fun. They were amused when i drank the whole thing (1/4 glass maybe) and said 'yes' when asked if i wanted more. That's when mom stepped in and stopped it. This was repeated a few times, just 1/4 glass and each time they were amused when i finished it and asked for more.
I don't remember them doing this with my brother, probably because he's a boy. Maybe they thought that boys are more prone to becoming alcoholics than girls.

LOL. In this country they'd have called child protective services and thrown those grownups in the slammer! Do you still like beer?

Wine. Half a sip. Was 24. And preggo!!! Daughter blames that half sip for all her current issues. Series of half sips or half glasses of different drinks continued until I was maybe 29, when I had two glasses of wine. Felt super sleepy and slept like a baby. More random one glasses happened until I was maybe 33 when I began working in NYC when I began progressing from half glasses, and that's when my variety increased with time and I discovered my tolerance levels. I still get buzzed pretty early. I still have never thrown up from it. Learned to control and hydrate early on. I don't care whether I drink or not. I enjoy a good buzz.

The level of tolerance is directly proportional to the strength of the booze and the quantity imbibed. Of course, Newton was too sober to come up with this law of intoxication so we had to remedy that. VB, has any of your dates been too inebriated for your liking?

If I were sober myself, I may not have liked the date(s) being too inebriated, lol.
That apart, the only time I got uncomfortable was in an office outing setting when some guy kept slapping my thigh or rubbing it at every joke. The worse part is, he was doing it a buddy sort of way, not in a hey-baby sort of way. Also, I knew he was a very decent guy otherwise inspite of being a gult (but then he was a Brahmin, no reddy ). Thoroughly confusing for me to decide if I should take offense or not. I just pretended to be too drunk to notice. Luckily for all of us, it was his farewell party.

16, rum. followed by gin. followed by whiskey.
i was asked to take one hour to finish the first peg (rum).
hated the taste but wanted to get high, so drank fast like in 15min.
felt nothing and wanted to try a different flavor, so had some gin. and then whiskey.
we were also eating some namkeen with it and by the end of 1hour i remember laughing too much and saying, " why am i not getting drunk?? i am not drunk. i dont think anything is happening"
oh and all this happened at home. i had decided if they dont let me try it at home then i will try it outside.
anyway...it was the baddest night of my life. i didnt feel any suroor or nasha. nothing. i kept vomiting. my aunt asked me to sleep and kept a tub next to my bed in case i need to throw up.
woke up next morning with a bad hangover.
couldnt even look at the ads on TV for days..no months after that without feeling nauseated.

my first drink was london pilsner. half a glass of it really with ice! i was 21.
my charminar came much earlier though. i and my friend stole one from my father's pack when nobody was home and attempted to smoke it. we were sweating more and smoking less. i attempted it yet another time with my cousin brother this time picking a leftover from the road. i must have been less than 12 on both the occasions.

Mine was Waterbury's Compound at age 7-8. Lovingly fed to me by my mom, in the hopes of curing me of my fussiness at mealtimes.
Around the same age, I discovered a quarter bottle of Doctor's Brandy in the medicine chest. My dad was (and remains) a teetotaler, so this was probably given by some well-meaning relative as "medicine" for my kid brother's colic. Whenever I was alone, I would take a swig of that stuff, just for the hot flush down the throat and the giddiness that followed. Nobody ever noticed that the bottle was mysteriously emptying. My next acquaintance with alcohol came only 15 years later, with Old Monk and thums up.

Toddy, the stuff that drips into an earthen pot tied at the top of on Palm trees. In our areas the slang word for that is Amrit-kundi." The real amrit-kundi is the prasaad they offer Lord Jagannath of Puri (milk with malay+sugar+shredded coconut+bananas++raisins+cardamom).
The toddy pot is a possesion protected with life. Even a wife is dispensible, but not the toddy pot, or the right to place it individual trees. There were cases when murders took place over stealing of toddy pots, or placing one on a tree staked out by another guy.

No idea about the alcohol % in Waterbury. Yes, we too had brandy given for helping with some fever or whatever as kids. Hated that stuff since it was called medicine! Seems like two out five would have had Old Monk as their first drink in India. I have never tasted Thums Up. Seen it in shops. Is that like ginger ale?Merlot Daruwala wrote:goodcitizn wrote:alcoholic drink? How old were you then?

beer at 17. did it as part of a bet to drink 4 bottles of kingfisher in an hour and stay awake and not throw up for an hour after that. won the bet and threw up all night. for rest of college days my favorite drink was gin with limca or coconut water. drank a bunch of toddy when visiting our village too, still do. only other time I threw up after consuming alcohol was in 2002 when I drank about 600ml of black label and inhaled a bunch of cigar smoke.

i got drunk exactly once at college. i found the experience highly unpleasant and have never gotten drunk ever again. other than that one experience, i have never thrown up because of imbibing alcohol.
i also did not drink a whole lot through my college years anyway because i didn't feel it was fair to spend the monthly allowance my father sent me to meet my mess bill, tuition, and sundry expenses, on alcohol.

Re: What was your first ...
actually, my dad, unlike his brothers, wished to be liberal and "forward." his principle was that if you (his kids and nephews) don't drink in front of me then you will definitely drink behind my back. to be honest, i appreciate his principles -- just that i was a bad kid (i explain later). his other principle was -- it does not matter to me whether you drink, smoke, play cricket or gamble as long long as you excel in academics. i do not appreciate all his principles but i appreciate most of them from a historical perspective and i/we have raised our kids differently. we 3 siblings were exposed to the same upbringing. my brother is strict vegetarian (born again) and teetotaller (born again) as is his family. the conclusion is: i would have taken to alcohol regardless of my father's exposing me to its perils at an early age. i never learnt the lesson for as captain bhankas' signature spells out clearly -- it is always in your genes, no matter what your sins. my kids, otoh, (well i'll stick to the older in this case for he is in college) does not smoke or drink *touchwood* and neither have i encouraged him nor discouraged him. genes skip a generation they say. i know he won't touch tobacco (he is ex-asthmatic) but i am no longer worried about him drinking for he has passed a significant milestone.goodcitizn wrote:Your dad gave you really? my sister, the 3rd sibling, ha ha, well she did not need any exposure. she started drinking and chewing tobacco when she was 13 (she was 8 when i was 13) behind my father's back. it is always in your genes no matter what your sins. upbringing has a limit but we humans tend to think it is all powerful and all encompassing. you just got to pray that you are lucky and give it your best shot. rest is up to god and genes.

It was brought to me in a "silver" glass and I drank it. I did feel pretty awful after imbibing it. I am sure it was fermented.
Now the "silver" thing. The locals call it "German Silver." It's the real light alluminum glass. Even the lotas we got during NCC camps were of that material. That lota was an "all purpose" lota. Same container for tea, water for drinking, and water for anytthing else.

you are right for i just googled. it takes 2 hours to ferment (which means while the container is on the tree) to reach 4% alcohol content. and it is collected overnight. only fresh juice is alcohol free. so what we drink has 4% alcohol.indophile wrote:Huzefa Kapasi wrote:hey doofus, the stuff that drip off of a palm tree is not toddy. it is fresh juice full of nutrients. we drink it once every year for kicks (not the other kick). to make toddy, that juice has to be fermented. i hope you know the difference.indophile wrote:Toddy, the stuff that drips into an earthen pot tied at the top of on Palm trees. Now the "silver" thing. The locals call it "German Silver." It's the real light alluminum glass. Even the lotas we got during NCC camps were of that material. That lota was an "all purpose" lota. Same container for tea, water for drinking, and water for anytthing else.

Props: In college it used to be Kalyani or Kingfisher. Or Vat 69. Gin with Limca is news to me.Propagandhi711 wrote:beer at 17. did it as part of a bet to drink 4 bottles of kingfisher in an hour and stay awake and not throw up for an hour after that. won the bet and threw up all night. for rest of college days my favorite drink was gin with limca or coconut water. drank a bunch of toddy when visiting our village too, still do. only other time I threw up after consuming alcohol was in 2002 when I drank about 600ml of black label and inhaled a bunch of cigar smoke.

if you drink it 4 hrs after it's brought down from the tree it tastes like crap. best to drink it right after they collect it

HK: I don't put too much stock into gene theories on alcohol. my first drink was tom collins when i was 13 years old -- courtesy my father. on the third night i threw up from excess consumption and my dad hoped i had learnt my first lesson about holding drinks. actually i never threw up after that. on the couple of occasions in college when i felt i had drunk excessively, i used to go for long walks within campus -- that would sober me down.
my sister, the 3rd sibling, ha ha, well she did not need any exposure. she started drinking and chewing tobacco when she was 13 (she was 8 when i was 13) behind my father's back. it is always in your genes no matter what your sins. upbringing has a limit but we humans tend to think it is all powerful and all encompassing. you just got to pray that you are lucky and give it your best shot. rest is up to god and genes.

Fresh toddy is called padhaneer in Tamil. On summer days we used to have a vendor sell those near our cricket grounds. A few chaps used to drink those only to get sick later. I have tried fermented (?) toddy once. It was harsh on the palate. Figured it must be an aquired taste because I didn't like it.Propagandhi711 wrote:Huzefa Kapasi wrote:you are right for i just googled. it takes 2 hours to ferment (which means while the container is on the tree) to reach 4% alcohol content. and it is collected overnight. only fresh juice is alcohol free. so what we drink has 4% alcohol.indophile wrote:Huzefa Kapasi wrote:hey doofus, the stuff that drip off of a palm tree is not toddy. it is fresh juice full of nutrients. we drink it once every year for kicks (not the other kick). to make toddy, that juice has to be fermented. i hope you know the difference.indophile wrote:Toddy, the stuff that drips into an earthen pot tied at the top of on Palm trees. yeah the point of imbibing toddy is not to get drunk but to get a mild buzz. if it ferments then it's no good

alcoholism has a genetic correlation. i was kidding in my posts above because we have no history of alcoholism. neither am i an alcoholic. i am just another masochist.goodcitizn wrote:

I have a hunch, my family has been testing this for many, many generations, but can't get one that skipped baldness. We are still working at it.goodcitizn wrote:

not sure what it was, might have been some whiskey or something but i was 14 and at a sleepover at my friend's home. She made me do it:-) felt really sick after a few sips. Till date, i blame her for my "electric lemonade" fixation.
BTW, bald is sexy, esp if you look like taye diggs. vin diesel and bruce willis come close. now "balding" -- that however is another issue:-) huge difference, atleast IMO.

** I'm going to give this one more shot:
** when a restaurant advertises free delivery and you take it upon yourself to tip the delivery man a single and he goes on to demand more and the customer refuses to give in to the demand it does not make her a cheapskate. if anything, the restaurant should just say that they will charge two bucks for delivery and end of story w/o misleading the customer. Also, tipping the wait staff or any other person in the service industry exorbitantly does not make one generous. Let people do their jobs and take pride in it - that's why people seek employment in the first place. Do not shame them with your largesse and rob them of the self-worth they gain from having a job, these people are not beggars.
