Starring doctors: Dishum-dishum in upscale M G Rd mall

A high-end mall. High-voltage action with blood and gore. Cops arriving at the scene brandishing revolvers. And a Sunday evening crowd gaping and staring at all this. People might have mistaken it for local goons scuffling, but... hold your breath... the characters involved in the ugly brawl were all doctors.

The central character in the drama is alleged to be an Indian-Canadian dentist, Kushdev Singh, 31, who had recently come to the city to join a private hospital. On Sunday evening, he allegedly targeted six other doctors along with his friends at 1 MG Road Mall without any provocation.

According to the police, the incident took place around 4.30 pm when Singh, a Canadian citizen, along with three other doctor friends, was leaving the mall. They were on the fifth floor of the mall. At the same time, another group of doctors, six of them all 25 years old, had come to the city from Mangalore to celebrate as one of their friends had recently cleared a Radiology exam. They were exiting a restaurant on the fifth floor and Dr Akash Ranjan, who was in the Mangalore group of doctors, was pushed allegedly by Singh and his band of doctors.

Dr Ranjan asked Singh and his group the reason for the unprovoked attack. That’s when Singh allegedly pushed another doctor Nithin Shetty too. “We were coming out of the restaurant when Kushdev Singh and three others started following us. They pushed me and I turned back and realised they were drunk. So I requested them to calm down,” says Dr Ranjan. Being well-built, he says, the Canadian doctor had an advantage over them, and he used it to behave like a school bully.

Police say the Canadian hit Dr Shetty on his forehead and launched a punch on his chest. Soon, others in his group too joined him , and they started raining blows on Dr Shetty.

Dr Ranjan says an attempt to stop the violence further incited them. “When one of us tried to defend the others, they started beating all of us -- Dr Kalyan Shetty, Dr Gaurav Reddy, Dr Sandeep and Dr Bharath Shetty. They were really brutal,” he says. Nithin Shetty has sustained multiple injuries on his face.

With the furore refusing to abate, someone from the crowd alerted the Ulsoor police. Four constables along with a sub-inspector rushed to the spot. “We saw Kushdev Singh and his friends attacking the six doctors from Mangalore. We told them to stop immediately, but they paid no heed, and continued in their frenzied assault,” an Ulsoor police official said.

He says they then took out their revolvers, and that worked. Singh and his pals were arrested and medical tests proved they were drunk.

Bangalore Mirror called Kushdev Singh on his cellphone, but he hung the phone on us. Later, a text message to the same number did not elicit any reaction.

However, Ulsoor police have granted bail to all the accused. They were booked under various sections of Indian Penal Code -- IPC 341 (wrongful restraining of any person), IPC 324 (causing hurt to others, IPC 323 (voluntarily causing hurt to any individual) and IPC 504 (criminal intimidation).
