At a time when Western countries are beginning to recognize non traditional medicine like the chinese, Ayurvedic, and Unani medicine it is a shame that Indian Govt and the Indian Medical Council (the counter part of AMA) are trying to kill the alternative medicine.

In US schools, a course on alternative medicine is now part of the curriculum and several states in US allow these practitioners - with even insurance covering their patients (Washington State and California).

Alternative medicine should be subjected to same checks and procedures as allopathy. Similar regulations and licensing.

Indeed. Back when I started posting on CH, one of my first arguments was with Uppili, and it was about this very topic.

Yes I agree and the Indian Alternative medicine IS regular. Check out The Central Council of Indian medicine. Also, search in Wiki. But what the Indian Medical Council wants is outright banning of these systems - with the present focus on Siddha System.

More than 95% of allopathic medicines are synthesized versions of plant and herbal medicine.

The process should be similar. Demonstrate results on subjects (read guinea pigs, seven look elsewhere). Have a clinical trial to demonstrate results and follow the full process to get medicines to market. A lot of alternative medicine has been known to work for long time but there should be a formal review process to regularize OTC and other medicines there. A lot of Ayurvedic medicines work well but require certain dietary restrictions to be followed. If those medicines are sold OTC and those restrictions are not clearly documented they can do more harm than good.

You can do clinical trials to determine if Siddha system works or not.
