IIT seats go vacant as 769 refuse to join
Who woulda thunk it?
MUMBAI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), where gaining admission is said to be more difficult than entering some Ivy League colleges in the US, have had to go through the ignominy of a second round of allotments to fill up all the seats. A total of 769 students, who got an opportunity to study in the premier institutes, did the unthinkable this year: They refused to study in an IIT. It's a rare situation where even general category seats in various IITs across the country have remained vacant after the first round of admission.

If you want to study computer science and the IIT says your JEE rank is not high enough and you should study only textile engineering, what would you do? Plus consider the prospect of your cohorts at IIT who major in Computer Science or EE looking down on you.

did the unthinkable? kidding? good that people/student, esp parents are coming to their senses that anything that has a name IIT is the best. Obviously, one would like to join DCE or top NITs with a discipline of his choice and go with the brand IIT and rots with some mining course or leather engg course he doesn't like. good addition by the editor/reporter: "half the seats in reserved are empty. 25% ARE ASKED TO LEAVE." -> JUST IMAGINE WHAT THESE STUDENTS, WHO ARE BARELY ELIGIBLE, WILL DO TO THE TOTAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT OF THE CLASS!!!!

The JEE-winners, as the geniuses are known, should have known that one could do Textile and then go to US for higher degrees in Materials, Polymer, or chemical engineering while computer sciencers end up as code coolies.

I worked with a girl from Bihar. We were both code coolies.
She did Textile Engineering at IIT-Delhi. I asked her whether it was something she wanted to do. She said no. She had no choice. She was offered Textile Engineering because her JEE rank was very low.
She came to America with Graduate Scholarship to do M.S. in Textile, polymer and fiber engineering at Georgia Tech. That strategy worked. She switched to M.S in computer science after a year.
At work, she went around telling Americans "I went to Georgia Tech."
