everything has come to a standstill. as a paper said, weapons of mass obstruction, red tapism, have suddenly been unleashed on us. sonia gandhi has been shorn of her veneer and we now see a person who lacks leadership qualities -- an obsessively blinking housewife who understands little about leading or having a vision stands in charge instead. her trusted lieutenants, it seems, are themselves exasperated by her state of funk. it's a situation in which the loudest voices that can be heard from the congress camp are those of nutjobs like digvijay singh. and, worse, the opposition is either nonexistent or doing nothing.

The reason for congress party taking a tough stand was the lessons learned from arab spring and anti corruption revolutions. Congress is interpreting if you entertain mass movements in free democratic way, they have a way of snowballing into major anti establishment movements like in Egypt and Tunisia. On the other hand , rulers are still around when they adopted stern practices and anti mass movement methods (ex; Iran, Syria, Bahrain etc.).

The other reason for Congress's tough stand is the opposition could not build a sustained movement on any single issue in the past few years. Opposition were disunited and constantly changing topics from Nuclear issue to price rise to corruption.

Of course, defeats in congress ruled states like Maharastra will change congress quickly.

Digvijay Singh is what US politicians call an attack dog. Shakespeare had a great line for this in Julius Caesar. Cry "havoc," and let slip the dogs of war! That is exactly what the spirit of Caesar did in this case.
