Welcome to the club Ms. Bagchi. I'm sure you will feel lot younger, wiser and smarter than you did in the last decade.

Thanks PN. Resolutions? No. I decided to keep my Zumba class yesterday inspite of all the odds. Managed to rub off atleast 3 people when I went out there. Guess 40s is the age when one discards the fluff stuff and does the needful. Maybe that's what max means by being forever cranky.

old friend of mine who is no more used to say that a healthy dissatisfaction with one's life is a pre-requisite to long term happiness. depression is bad, but a bit of crankiness is quite a healthy thing. i think he was onto something.Vidya Bagchi wrote:Maybe that's what max means by being forever cranky.

and at a certain point in life you've enough battle scars and have earned the right to be cranky. wear it proudly.

Poor guy, your friend ... if he was your age, he didn't do too well in terms of long term good health and happiness.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:old friend of mine who is no more used to say that a healthy dissatisfaction with one's life is a pre-requisite to long term happiness. depression is bad, but a bit of crankiness is quite a healthy thing. i think he was onto something.Vidya Bagchi wrote:Maybe that's what max means by being forever cranky.

that's exactly how i felt. the guy was like an ox. quite a physical specimen -- squash player, belonged to the moutaineering club at IIT, skier, avid biker. you name it. and when cancer got him it felt like a healthy tree going down.Bittu wrote: pancho is this a man or a tree?

ok. I didn't know the context and didn't bother to find out. so that's my mistake. Your usage of 'felled' is quite apt.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:that's exactly how i felt. the guy was like an ox. quite a physical specimen -- squash player, belonged to the moutaineering club at IIT, skier, avid biker. you name it. and when cancer got him it felt like a healthy tree going down.Bittu wrote: pancho is this a man or a tree?
Now you take my cue and reply with "no worries Bittu. On the other thread, you are correct in pointing out that I have a problem with punctuation. FF and I went to neighboring schools. His teacher struggled with hyphens and mine struggled with apostrophes. I don't know if FF goes to HA but I attend AA regularly - Apostrophes Anonymous."

>>>Albert Camus, I think, had a more extreme version of this. It went something like if someone had never considered suicide and actively ruled it out, he hadn't made an active choice to live.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:old friend of mine who is no more used to say that a healthy dissatisfaction with one's life is a pre-requisite to long term happiness. depression is bad, but a bit of crankiness is quite a healthy thing. i think he was onto something.Vidya Bagchi wrote:Maybe that's what max means by being forever cranky.
P.S> I never read Camus for fear that he would depress me.

Sorry to hear that about your friend.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:he was of excellent health until he was felled by cancer.
There was another guy, an ex-IITBombayite, teaching in the Middle-East when I was working there. He was relatively young and healthy. A few years later, after I had returned to Canada, I heard that he died from brain cancer after he returned to India and resumed teaching in IIT Bombay.
