CHENNAI: After a spectacular debut in the Delhi assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party decided to test the waters down south. Suffice to say that the response was more than warm.
Holding its first ever enrolment drive in the state, in Chennai, on Sunday, the AAP exceeded its own expectations, with at least 1,000 people registering as members and volunteers.
Most of the AAP's new recruits were youngsters, under 30. But there were retired officials, too, and homemakers among college students. It was a motley crowd that converged on Balagraha Mini Hall in West Mambalam, but they were all there for causes they shared: They wanted to serve society and rid the country of corruption. They may have been registering as members of a political party but politics was the last thing on their minds.
"I feel like I have joined a movement and not a political party," said 28-year-old film maker Ashwin Raj. "As a citizen you want to be part of a force can weed out corruption."
Rajkumar and Srivastav, both 19, told their mothers they were going out with friends. "Our parents will let us do anything, except join a political party," Rajkumar said. "We want to make a change the way the country works."
"This is a party of educated people," said engineering student Manikandan Jayaraman, 20. "It does not have goondas or use muscle power."
The AAP has had its doubters since it was set up in November 2012. But for sceptics like HR professional Subashree Das, AAP's electoral debut in Delhi changed everything.
"People with no political background made it possible to win the assemble elections in the capital. You could call me a convert. When there are elections in the state, I think sceptics like me will take a big leap of faith and vote for the AAP."
Gayatri Rajasekar, a soft skills consultant, enrolled in the AAP. "Kejriwal has fought as a common man and motivated people like me to think beyond work and family and contribute to the society," she says.
The newly-inducted people are in no hurry for the common man's party to conquer the Dravidian bastion of Tamil Nadu. "AAP doesn't have a big chance in the state but it has caught the attention of Tamils," said Gautam K, 24, a software engineer. "I was thinking of joining the Youth Congress but AAP seemed more promising. It will take time, but I believe youngsters can change the mentality of people here."
Another new member who switched allegiances from a regional party was retired bank official Ashok Kumar. "The Dravidian parties will be more responsible if a strong party emerges to challenge them," said Sheik Arabi, 27.
AAP functionaries said the Chennai camp was important to draw more volunteers. "Our volunteers won the Delhi elections for us. We want to build support in every parliamentary constituency and field candidates in every state for the general elections," AAP founder-member Ronald Ansari said.

In TN the number should be in 100s of thousands to have any chance.
Even KV's P. Nedumaran's party has 1500 members.
Rishi is right. Aam Aadmi Party is a non-starter. It is dead on arrival in TN.
Aaam Aaadmi? Amaanda Bemani...

So Tamils live in a cave, oblivious to what's happening in urban India? What exactly do Tamil newspapers write about then (other than Amma's rhetoric from her last public rally)?

Kasoori bala isonly 42. He is not bad looking compared to Rajni. So he can act in a couple of movies and he will be instantly accepted by Tamil masses.

>>>If it is an upstanding publication like TamTrib, run by that eminent journalist Thanji NutsAndSilly, there is always the ealam issue, Captain P as the second coming, the unfortunate misunderstanding of the LTTE reps in TN (who are simply viewed as political assassins of Rajiv Gandhi as opposed to the Jeffersonian idealists they really are) etc. This whole Indian national political stuff is boring and peripheral. it becomes relevant only when someone dares to put up a sign somewhere south of the vindhyas in hindi and then rest assured all hell will break loose.Merlot Daruwala wrote:Rishi wrote:>>>When Tamils see the picture of a NI guy with a Gandhi cap and a party name they do not understand, the probability of this party making any headway in TN is almost zero.
