The times they are changing: Pro-Hindi political party launched in Tamil Nadu
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu once saw violent agitations against imposition of Hindi as an official language. Now, decades later, the state on Monday witnessed the birth of a party which has openly taken a pro-Hindi stand.
Tamil Maanila Katchi, the outfit launched byMadras High Court Advocates Association(MHAA) president R C Paul Kanagaraj, has also made non-discrimination of Brahmins one of its main planks. The launch saw the participation of a large number of advocates.
"Denying Hindi education to our children has not helped their development, and hence we need to break from the past and make Hindi a compulsory subject at least till Class V," said Kanagaraj. In place of a bilingual system of learning, there will be a trilingual regime including Hindi, he said.
Discrimination of any section of people on the basis of caste is not only illegal but also unconstitutional, he said, adding that the anti-Brahmin rhetoric by politicians for the past several decades was purely for political reasons.
Development of barren lands and safeguarding interests of fishermen, traders and women too were declared policies of the new party. Asked whether it would contest in the coming general elections, Kanagaraj said a decision in that regard would be taken next week after consulting other office-bearers of the party.
Kanagaraj made a strong pitch for abolishing the practice of distributing freebies by governments, saying it made people lazy. "Instead, they should be given governmental assistance to better their trade such as farming or business," he said.
Noting that total prohibition could not be achieved overnight, the new party's president said steps would be taken to gradually reduce the number of Tasmac shops in the state as well as availability of liquor across the counter. "Ultimately, if not total prohibition, at least responsible and judicious vending of liquor would be achieved," Kanagararaj said.
As for the troubles of Tamil Nadu fishermen, he said countries need not wage wars to protect the interests of fishermen.

Re: The times they are changing: Pro-Hindi political party launched in Tamil Nadu
Now that a new political party has emerged in TN with a pro-Hindi agenda I wonder whether some of the posters on this forum will be choking on their own bile on hearing this news. Meanwhile my basic stand--that the attitude towards Hindi in TN has undergone a drastic transformation in the last few decades--stands vindicated.
Also it is interesting that this party makes a deliberate attempt to reach out to Brahmins.

CHENNAI: A new political party -- the Tamil Maanila Katchi-- with pro-Hindi and non-discrimination of Brahmins as its main policies was launched in Tamil Nadu on Monday.
Advocate and president of the Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA) R C Paul Kanagaraj was elected chief of the party. The launch of the party saw the participation of a large number of advocates.
"Denying Hindi education to our children has not helped their development, and hence we need to break from the past and make Hindi a compulsory subject at least up to Class V," said Paul Kanagaraj.
Discrimination of any section of people on the basis of caste was not only illegal but also unconstitutional, he said, adding that anti-Brahmin rhetoric had been made by politicians for the past several decades for political reasons.
In the place of bilingual system of learning, there should be trilingual regime inclusive of Hindi, he said.
Development of barren lands and safeguarding the interests of fishermen, traders and women are also part of the policies of the new party.
Asked whether it would contest in the coming Lok Sabha elections, Kanagaraj said a decision in that regard would be taken next week after consulting the other office-bearers of the party.
