Do bigger governments lead to happier people?
"Benjamin Radcliff is a professor of political science at the University of Notre Dame. His current research focuses on how public policy affects human happiness. His recent book, "The Political Economy of Human Happiness," argues that generous welfare states and strong labor market protections produce happier citizens than do more laissez-faire policies."
More decommodification makes people happier, and it does so for rich and poor people, men and women, and controlling for just about any other thing. Similar empirical results obtain when considering total social spending on education, health care, total government consumption, the tax burden, a well-known OECD measure of employee protection legislation, even indices on the size of government and labor market regulation from the conservative Fraser Institute. The smaller the government, the less happy people are.

communist china, cuba, north korea and erstwhile soviet union are examples of the biggest governments possible. perhaps the good professor and other unhappy communists should move to one of those places and watch their happiness index rise through the roof?

Nevada, atrocities committed on the folks that belong to SC/ST communities are as prevalent as the exploitation of SC/ST prevention act [by the SC/STs], if not more. I don't think Indian govt. takes everyone of the crimes committed on the minorities seriously. Having said that you're right about DK's father's influence (I stand corrected). In India, generally rich & powerful, no matter which community they hail from, almost always find their way out; no disagreement on that front.
