David A. (jetjocki)

Let's take a look at the real odds at being a victim of criminal homicide by firearm........

On an annual basis there a "random" chance of 0.0027% of being the victim of a criminal homicide by firearm in this country.

But, is the "chance" truely "random"?

NO it is not!

1) If you have NOT been arrested for a violent felony crime (homicide, assault, robbery, rape, etc.) your "random" chance is reduced by 60%. This means your chance of being a victim falls to 0.0016%

2) If you have NOT been arrested for ANY felony crime your "random" chance has been reduced by over 75%. This results in a chance of 0.0007% of being a victim of a firearm homicide.

3) Now factor in other variables such as high risk locations and time of day (Example: hanging out near a sleazy urban bar or liquor store between 11pm and 4am), and the chances fall significantly further.

The bottom line is that as a normal law abiding citizen you have a far greater chance each year of being hit by lightning while hanging out in your backyard than you do of being a victim of a firearm homicide.

Assumptions: US population - 330 Million; Total criminal homicides by firearms - 9,000

Sources: FBI Uniform Crime Reports; CDC; US Census Buerau

One of my clients killed 2 people and was gun down by the cops - just 6 months back. What can I say... and I just had a bad meeting with him sometime before that.
