The reverse has happened. The article of MJ Akbar is from 2002. That was when he was secular. Akbar has now decided to join the bandwagon of Narendra Modi who he was bashing and thrashing in his 2002 article.

If you sit and think rationally, it does not make sense to punish innocent Muslim for the murder committed by the Muslim mob waiting for that train to arrive in Godhra. But people as a group do not behave rationally.

Btw, Vajpayee even got the nickname Hajpayee for increasing the Haj quota in Govt. subsidies for making religious pilgrimages when he was the prime minister. Advani used to think, and probably still does, that Jinnah (who demanded and carved out a religion based country, Pakistan, out of India for Muslims by using the argument that Muslims can't live with Hindus) was a secularist. Joshi thinks and tells people that the Brits had ignored Urdu during the Raj, because the Brits' Govt. in India probably treated Urdu just like a dialect of Hindi (Hindi written in the modified Persian script).

It has just come to my attention that in his book 'The End of India', the recently deceased Khushwant Singh has argued that Narendra Modi is the reincarnation of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. According to Khushwant religious fundamentalism has the potential to kill the secular India as we know it today and transform it into a theocracratic state ( a Hindu version of Pakistan or Iran).

Agreed, but despite its shortcomings the Indian state is still better than Iran or Pakistan which is what India will become if the religious fundamentalists in India have their way.

Indians don't need to find solace elesewhere for the poor performance and shortcomings of their own politicians and Govt.
