How ’12th pass’ Smriti Irani took her ministry’s babus by surprise
And judging by the same, a senior officer who interacted with her on her first day at work, said that she is not remotely at a loss about the enormous challenge facing her. Smriti Irani. IBN Live. To bolster his claim, the officer, who requested anonymity, cited the first big departmental meeting Irani attended. She asked for a review meeting on the Human Resource Development ministry's ambitious Rs 450 crore, 50 educational television channels project. Irani convened the meeting immediately after secretary Ashok Thakur informed her that the project was a high priority one for the ministry. A MoU has already been signed by the ministry with the government-owned Prasar Bharti. The proposed channels, which aims to cater to the educational needs of higher education institutions like the IITs and IIMs, would be put on a new DTH platform via DSAT8 satellite transponder. The review meeting convened by Irani witnessed participation from the top guns of HRD ministry, Prasar Bharti and Doordharshan. Sources say that as joint secretary Pravin Prakash launched into a long narration of the technical details of the project, Irani reportedly intervened, asking him to focus on the content aspect of these channels. "Quality content is the key to the success of this project. Students will watch the channels only if the content is great and it's presented well. We should focus on that. Technical aspects will surely be taken care of by the designated teams," she said. She then suggested how Animal Planet and Discovery Channel develops content and presents them, making them hugely popular in India. An official who was present in the meeting told Firstpost, "Her inputs took everyone by surprise. Ir game a strong impression that she dies her homework, she is focused and understands the operational aspects well. The questions she posed to the officials were sharp and informed. Some of them were critical about how the department was approaching the project, especially its financial aspect. She didn't seem like someone who'll be easily weighed down by the pressures of the job." In fact, Irani was reportedly very stern with the bureaucrats and asked them why the project cost had escalated so much. The officials had a difficult time explaining the expenditure aspect to Irani. She took the officials to task when they said that the cost of setting up each studio would be to the tune of Rs 50 lakh. "She pointed out that the costing seems questionable since she has worked in the film and television industry and the kind of studios the ministry is looking at shouldn't cost that much," the source said. Her feedback threw off several senior officials who are seeking to set up at least 200 such studios across the country.

Uppili and Rishi,
For the sake of India, I would like Irani to succeed. But there is something called news manipulation. These anonymous sources could be 'news plant' wishing to repair Irani's image.

Getting degree after degree is NOT education. Some of the real smart ones have no degrees and hence no chips n their shoulder.
I know of some politicians who lied about Cambridge and Harvard degrees, and some shamless Oxford PhDs shamelessly bowing before barmaids....not that there is anything wrong with that.

True. But that doesn't mean that every high-school dropout is a genius either. If she proved her street-smartness or organizational skill in other areas at least , people would've accepted her. Apart from losing two high profile elections and acting in TV serials , she did nothing to prove that she is fit to hold that job. This looks like a bad choice and first misstep from Modi , whichever way you cut it.

Bad choice/good choice - it is Modi's prerogative. I browsed her background. Not highly degreed, she certainly did well - very well - in her profession. She was even a finalist in Ms. India contest.
How great was a choice when Sonia was "recruited" to lead COng(i) in 94, UPA Chairman in 2005, controlling the ma-Beta sarkar for 10 long years leading to string of scandal after scandal....? Is there a minimum degree qualification to head each ministry ? Can any of the ministers in UPA show that they all got their degrees - with DISTINCTION (why not?). Actually, ALL the ministers in UPA from Naarth wrote their exams in the 70s with a knife threateningly stuck on the exam writing table.
Was there EVER a whisper on the qualification of her or anyone? Look what the Oxford PhD and the Harvard MBA did to the country ? 2 consecutive years of < 5% growth, which for develping country is a non-growing economy. For India, accounting for inflation, it is a negative growth.
Hey, perhaps, time to let high school dropouts to run the country for 5 years and see.

Think....think deep (wait...that is not in your resume...but still worth trying)
It is YOU and other iSlamo-apologists who are judging her failure after a single day's work. At least read carefully....I said give them time.

I don't think I commented on her appointment other than voicing my displeasure over choosing a big loser (that lost by more than a lakh votes)Marathadi-Saamiyaar wrote:confuzzled dude wrote:

CD,
Winning by big majority or losing by large deficit does not change anything in an election. It is still one seat. That is not a logical reason to keep her away.
Uppili,
You post above about harvard mba and oxford ph.d. is an emotional outburst. One logical argument you made is Modi made a choice and we should give it a chance. Let us wait 6 months to an year (or a major event).

People didn't have great expectations on Sonia and they didn't overwhelmingly vote for her. Whatever votes she got were from people who preferred the status quo.Marathadi-Saamiyaar wrote:

OTOH , Modi generated optimism and hope for a better future. Hence the disappointment.

That at some point in distant history, she looked good in a swimsuit, and also professed a desire to work for world peace.

You would not understand that unless you belong to the "other side" as well (not that there is anything wrong with that). Haven't you noticed how men behave differently in the presence of a woman - that too not a bad looking woman?

I agree Max. She should ask some complex equations and theorems to prove on first day. Can you post some assignments here I can forward to her ministry?MaxEntropy_Man wrote:so much brouhaha over a minister asking some basic questions on her first day at work! such low expectations.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Some suckers fall for Batma Laxmi. Others fall for Smriti Irani.
