Rahul is clearly not the man to take on Modi. But who in the Congress is? The following names come to mind: Captain Amarindar Singh ( who defeated Jaitley), Kamal Nath, and Manish Tiwari. It is possible that there is someone else. An essential qualification for such a person is that he or she must be good in Hindi. This rules out Chidambaram who even otherwise does not have a mass base and is unable to win even his own seat unless Congress has an alliance with one of the two main Dravidian parties.

It might be best for the Gandhi family to henceforth play the role of Kingmaker, just like the RSS, but let someone else be the PM. And that someone else has to be someone with a mass base ( unlike Manmohan)

Congress has no future unless it really earnestly wants to work for Indian people. They cannot fool Indian voters any longer with subsidies and religious fears.  They need real party cadre and leaders that does something really good to the people of a state and win them.  SC/st subsidies and fear mongering to get minority votes got them to develop bad habits and gathered lot of selfish money looters.  The rise of Indian middle class,  and modern media are going to make congress revival very difficult.

However, one thing going for congress is problems of India are really tough. If modi fails to deliver,  people may still opt other known evil congress.  Then it does not matter whether it is rahul or a dog leading congress. 

If Modi delivers, congress is finished.
