We keep reading references and some peeps claiming how india was scientifically much ahead. based on ramayan/mahabharat, we could have test tube babies; we could fly; we could make advanced bridges; we could even do satellite transmission of news; we could do head transplants; and hanuman chalisa recites the distance of sun from earth (as per NASA no less).

why no word on refrigeration? For sure we needed one. For sure they knew snow exists and things don't go bad in ice...

then? what?

same idea as an evaporatively cooled clay pot water pitcher.

Things don't go bad even if you pickled them, sun dried them etc. Use the easiest nature assisted solution for the problem at hand.

Actually, this is the BEST for drinking water. It cools appropriately based on the local temperature and rel humidity, which also control your thirst (to some extent). The water is neither too cold (ice-cold) or (too warm) for your body and throat - especially.

Or, as they use in India (before the refrigerator fashion took over), a simple pot covered by a wet cloth and placed on a mound of moist sand will do just fine.

oh ya.. matka of course... also matka kulfi but that didn't cross my mind as i have seen them using ice to keep things cool.

So cooling was there. guess I should have been more specific. meant making ice cold temps, or ice itself. (sorry didn't read the link fully).
