All you need to know about Ebola
With 4,450 deaths reported yet, the current outbreak in west Africa — first cases notified in March 2014 — is the largest and most complex Ebola outbreak since the Ebola virus was first discovered in 1976. There've been more cases and deaths in this outbreak than all others combined. The is the first that has involved major urban as well as rural areas.
Incubation period or time interval from infection to onset of symptoms is from 2 to 21 days. Humans are not infectious until they develop symptoms.
Stage 1
Headache, Sore throat, Fever, Muscle soreness
Stage 2
High fever, Vomiting, Passive behaviour
Stage 3
Bruising, Bleeding from nose, mouth, eyes; Blood in stool, Impaired liver function
Stage 4
Loss of consciousness, Seizures, Internal bleeding leading to death
Hospital protocol for Ebola hit:
1. Handling personal protective equipment (PPE)
Everyone entering room should wear PPE that consists of gloves, a fl uid-resistant gown, goggles/ mask & shoes
2. Removal
PPE should be "carefully removed without contaminating eyes or clothing" and thrown away. Guidelines show correct way to remove gear
3. Isolation
Patient must be placed in a single room with bathroom and door. Hospital must keep a log of everyone who goes into the room.
4. Fluid Control
Mattress & pillow should have covering that don't allow fl uids to get through. Patient's room shouldn't be carpeted.
5. Disinfecting
All surfaces to be disinfected daily using disposable cloths and wipes. Used cloths & wipes to be kept in leak-proof container, eliminated by incineration.
6. No Needles
Needles should be used at a minimum; when used, "handled with extreme care".
The virus can be spotted by low WBC and platelet counts and elevated liver enzymes, and its symptoms are similar to those of malaria, typhoid fever and meningitis.
