Kendriya Vidyalaya dumps German for Sanskrit in mid-year shift
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/education/news/Kendriya-Vidyalaya-board-dumps-German-for-Sanskrit-in-mid-year-shift/articleshow/45141160.cmsCHENNAI: In a move dubbed as "retrograde" by sections of parents and educationist, the Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) board has decided to discontinue teaching German as a third language option in the middle of the academic year. The decision is likely to affect thousands of students of Classes 6 to 8 in 500-odd KVs across the country which teach German.
Students are already in their second term and have completed at least one summative and one formative assessment. The academic year ends in early March.
The decision was taken at the latest board meeting of the KVs held on October 27, which was chaired by Union minister of human resource development Smriti Irani. It is apparently aimed at restoring the primacy of the three-language formula under which English and two modern Indian languages are taught.

Education Minister Smriti Irani has, however, said the decision was taken in national interest.
Over 70,000 students across 500 Kendriya Vidyalayas from classes 6 to 8 will be asked to switch from German to Sanskrit, say officials.
Sources say the minister has ordered an investigation into how this was allowed; the 2011 Memorandum of Understanding that made German a third language "violates the national education policy", said officials. The pact was signed between the Kendriya Vidyalayas and Goethe Institute-Max Mueller Bhawan and was allegedly not referred to the ministry though it was signed in the presence of E Ahmed, then the Minister of State for Human Resources Development.
"The MoU was against our rules. Our formula of three languages will not be violated," Smriti Irani said.
In the three-language formula, schools teach Hindi, English and a modern Indian language - Sanskrit is said to be a popular option in northern states.

The correct policy ought to be: Local Indian language/First language; English/Second language; Hindi, Sanskrit, German, French, Swahili etc/Third language. The students should make the choice based on what they think is useful for their future, not Irani or some other Hindian.Kayalvizhi wrote:a- KVI is supposed to teach Hindi, English and a modern Indian language. Who made Irani the decider of student's choice? German learning students should not be forced to switch to Sanskrit. They should have the option to switch to ant modern Indian language. May be some will switch to state language. That is more useful than Sanskrit.
