He was a genius and his movies were way ahead of his times. To me, he is one of the best directors Indian cinema has produced and probably the best from south (I've not seen Aduri's movies). Anthuleni katha, toorpu padamara, maro charitra, guppedu manasu, akali rajyam and many more... all wonderful movies.

Yes..he was one of the most brilliant storytellers- greatest moviemakers.. of all time!
A man who had apparently great compassion for human beings who are flawed..people who are seen as "failures and weird" in life..the portrayals of their complex characters..always thought provoking..when it comes to double standards of society.
No one even comes close in Tamil Cinema (since I am familiar with only tamil cinema) in creating the most powerful women characters..he was careful not to make women seem just like victims, but "own" their tough choices..widow remarriages, marrying women who are seen as fallen- prostitutes, single pregnant women..strong working women who broke glass ceilings..even women who cross the age barriers falling in love with much older and younger men, socioeconomic differences..who made bold and controversial decisions..as a teenager was just in awe when I watched his movies- the women characters he created. It was always about family dynamics..sacrifices too.
Forget Rajini's grand intros in his mega box office hit movies..(ironically, he introduced Rajini to the world as the first estranged husband of Srividya)..the way he introduced his women characters..was just memorable..
If anyone is interested and has time..
The late. Shobha in "Nizhal Nijamakirathu"..
So lovely..
The late. Sujatha in "Aval oru thodar kathai"..
So elegant and tough!
