The Chinese recently may not be the pioneers in using the poop power from human poop.  There are references in the ancient texts which point to the use of human poop possibly in the place of animal dung, implying that poop power (perhaps from the dried up poop) probably was used domestically thousands of years ago as a source of power (in heating / cooking). Note also that in the "gobar" gas operation (using animal dung for gas), most of the residue in the form of manure is still available for use in the field after the gas portion has been siphoned out for power. In addition, the fertilizer quality of this type of manure (after going through the “gobar” gas plant) seems to be better than the ordinary manure (made directly from the animal dung, without undergoing “gas” production).
