Psycho analysis using movie name!
Please name your favorite movie. I need just one name. There is a chart out there to map your personality to the name of the movie. But I don't want to disclose details before I get input from a bunch of people. Please respond with your favorite hindi movie and english movie. TIA.

reminds me of the laughs we used to have when in school. there was a movie hall in my town with the name of Vaishali Cinema. boys used to ask each other "Vaishali ko kya laga hain?"* and the answer would be "shahenshah," "khuddar," "aaj ka arjun," "mr india" etc. that sounded much funnier in marathi.

most indian languages don't have the 'zha' sound or the guttural sound produced by the aitha ezhuththu in thamizh. yet we don't think of it as a limitation. most languages don't have the clicking sound characteristic of some african languages. so why single thamizh out?
in any case the modern thamizh script does have letters for "ja" and "ha"; except they are made up letters and not part of the original alphabet. while some puritans object to using those letters, i don't.

I am surprised that you are asking this question. The number of Tamizh sounds missing in Sanskrit is MUCH lower than the number of Sanskrit sounds missing in Tamizh. In fact, even English has more Sanskritic sounds than Tamizh does. This simple fact would have been obvious to a thoughtful person like you, if you did not have a few blind spots (Eg: Tamizh and Hindutva).
Before I go further, let me state that it is indeed a limitation of other languages that they are not equipped to adequately spell such beautiful names of Tamizh-origin as Kanimozhi, Malarvizhi, etc. At the same time, it is a limitation of Tamizh that it absolutely murders many non-Tamizh proper nouns that absolutely need accurate distinctions in pronunciation. Eg: The Sanskrit-origin names Bharata, Paartha, Ananda and Sudhaakara. Tamizh has just a SINGLE letter for the FOUR DISTINCT sounds in these names: ta, tha, da, dha respectively.
Now a staunch Tamizhian might argue that a single Tamizh letter is enough to adequately pronounce all four Sanskrit names I mentioned above, but such a Tamizhian would be a blind Tamizhian.
Unfortunately for Tamizh, the number of times other languages need the 'zha' sound is significantly lower than the number of times Tamizh needs distinctive letters for distinctive sounds of other languages. Hence, the frequency of people complaining about Tamizh's limitations is understandably and correctly higher.

WOW..all this from your translator
and that's a alot of internalization from a translator but there is always more to learn i guess
perhaps (s)he could start with : http://tamilnation.co/literature/geetha.htm
>>>you say..Tamizh has just a SINGLE letter for the FOUR DISTINCT sounds in these names: ta, tha, da, dha ...
vallina letters sound variations
Unlike other Indian languages, Tamil has single
glyphs for ka, cha, ta, tha, pa, Ra. But their sounds
vary depending on the context where they occur.
They have normal sound while occurring in the
beginning of a word, strong sound when preceded
by their consonants, soft sound while occurring in
the middle of a word and a special sound when
preceded by their ina ezhuthukkaL ங், ஞ், ண், ந், ம் and ன்.
kappal - ka (when comes at the beginning of a word)
akkaaL - (when preceded by its consonant க்)
thangam - ga (when comes in words preceded by ங்)
pahal - ha (when occurs in the middle of a word
without prefixing ங் or க்
Same thing happens with ச ட* த ப ற letters also
* that's for your ta, tha, da, dha etc.,
Like most ancient languages, tamil also is a bit intutive, I should think

SomeProfile wrote: At the same time, it is a limitation of Tamizh that it absolutely murders many non-Tamizh proper nouns that absolutely need accurate distinctions in pronunciation.
murdering of proper nouns has been going on for ages between speakers of indian languages. i don't think thamizh speakers are particularly unique. haven't you heard northindian english newsreaders absolutely murder v.r.nedunchezhian's name, while in the same newscast pronounce francois mitterand perfectly, accent at the right places and all?
wrt your other comments:
i reproduce below with some modifications a post of mine from elsewhere:
here's how to resolve the perceived ambiguity or what you folks have
called missing consonants. the hard consonants ka(ga), cha (sa), ta(da),
tha (dha), pa(ba), Ra are called vallinams.
the soft consonants (mellinam) are ngya, nga, three variations of na
and ma and the intermediate consonants (idayinam) are ya, ra, la, va,
zha, La. the so called ambiguity arises only in the use of the hard
consonants (vallinams). the way to resolve when to use ka, cha, ta and tha and when to use the variants is detailed below:
1) when the letter occurs at the beginning of a word as in kAdu, use the first variant (in this case ka).
2) when the letter occurs after a meiyezhutthu (a dotted letter which is
used to create stress, i.e. the half-matra variant) as in pAkku, use
the first variant (in this case the ku occurs after the half-matra 'k'
the meiyyezhutthu).
3) in all other instances use the second variant. example nAdu (not
nAtu). the Ra has another variant ra but it is not counted as a vallinam but as an idayinam and the rules are very clear for use of ra versus Ra, so that's a different discussion altogether.
illustrative examples:
1) pachchai versus pasu ('cha' following half-matra 'ch' versus freely occurring 'sa' in the middle of a word)
2) pokkai versus pagai ('ka' following half-matra 'k' versus freely occurring 'ga' in the middle of a word)
3) paththu versus pAdhi. ('tha' versus 'dha'; same difference as above two examples)
4) kAli (not gAli) versus pagai ('ka' versus 'ga'; 'ka' at the beginning of a word versus 'ga' in the middle of a word)
etc.
there are probably exceptions but generally these rules apply.
exceptions are more likely to occur in words borrowed from other
languages including sanskrit.
reasonable people can disagree, but i find this to be a case of a
self-consistent set of rules obviating the need for extra letters to
represent consonants, rather than a lack of consonants.

p.s: may i request you to either write the name of our language as tamil or thamizh (not tamizh which sounds rather like something in urdu)?

Re: Psycho analysis using movie name!
This scheme works with native Tamil words, if they never require a ga sound pronounced at the beginning of a word. But once Tamil started exchanging words with Sanskrit, it needed to broaden its alphabet to it could accommodate such words. Max mentioned additional letters being created -- that's the right approach to improve clarity.garam_kuta wrote:garam_kuta wrote:SomeProfile wrote:MaxEntropy_Man wrote:kinnera wrote:
Again, it's poompuhaar (same letter for ka and ha? Why aren't there more letters in tamil? There's always so much distortion)
most indian languages don't have the 'zha' sound or the guttural sound produced by the aitha ezhuththu in thamizh. yet we don't think of it as a limitation. most languages don't have the clicking sound characteristic of some african languages. so why single thamizh out?

HTH for you and your translator
