..distress sales of cattle...

ToI wrote: The first thing that strikes you about Dahegaon village is its run-down and abandoned bullock-carts. They can be found lying outside most huts, with their paint peeling off, almost frozen in time. The animals which used to operate the carts are no longer there.

Nearly half the village of 5,000 people sold has off its bullocks over the last few months, says sarpanch S M Balki. The drought and unseasonal rains had destroyed crops and drained finances, sharpening a long-running agrarian crisis. "Sales peaked in March, when bank instalments have to be paid," says Balki.

The state government's decision to extend the ban on cow slaughter to bullocks that very month, added to the crisis. Prices of livestock crashed since old bullocks that would have sold to abattoirs, found no takers. "It's a question of demand and supply. Now that the old bullocks remain in the market, prices have almost halved," says Balki.

Farmers here feel betrayed by the government. "They were like 'bol bachchans' before the elections, even promising better prices. Now we are left to fend for ourselves," says local farmer Vijay Dhaman.

Hi Merlot,

I think it is stupid to impose any kind of ban on personal freedom.

I do not know if pork is banned in Pakistan, Malaysia, or Mid-east, but India is a greater country.

Either respect all life, or do not be selective, based on religion.

You cannot eat chicken, mutton, and fish, and then all giddy at the mention of beef. It is illogical to my mind.

Take care,
TS.

I think Cows are considered pets in India, due to historical reasons partly religious/cultural. A ban is still a bad idea. The same could have been achieved with better regulation and by specifying humane practices to kill them OR regulate the amount that gets killed.

I think if large scale  Dog and cat Meat stores are opened in US,  it will not be received well.

Dogs, Cats, Birds, Cows, Snakes, Toads, Pigs, or Fish.

To prefer one over the other is nothing but a caste-system of animals, in our stupid religions.

Veggies have it right - they reject all. They dont discriminate.

Its only the non-veggies, who try to justify a SC/ST over a Brahmin, even in animals they eat! :-))

This is not about religions. It is about the concept of pets. Culturally if something is adopted as a pet in a large scale, then people will  not like to see the animals slaughtered for meat and sold openly without regulation.

Goats are popular pets in the US. So are lambs, rabbits, turtles and fish. All their meats are freely available to those who like it.

Who in India keeps bulls and bullocks as pets?? Let's not concoct phony rationales for a politically motivated step. This too is pandering to a minority. This is BJP style vote bank politics.

You are wrong. Dogs and cats are the largest set of pets in US. The others may be exotic , but  not on a large scale, and moreover people consider Dogs and cats as a special case. If there is s large set of stores selling dog meat in US, it is likely to be a big problem.  Off course your Political Islamist friends in Kerala use dogs for target practice as an alleged initiation ritual into Political Islamism and Jihadism, so it might be difficult for you to accept this

In India, Cows apart from being considered sacred, was considered a pet. Not in modern urban India, but in large parts of rural India. Bulls helps in creating new cows. So it is a cultural issue too.

I have already said a ban now only creates issues. What is needed is better regulation to control the slaughter process and sale of meats.

With urbanization this is gone and even in rural India, things are changing, but the concept is still prevalent.

The reason for cows cohabiting humans, might have been its sacredness originating in religion and the fact that it provides Milk (an essential nutrient) and cow dung (used as fuel). But conceptually it is a pet. It might not have
reciprocated the same level of emotions as a dog, but still it was cared for. For many families the well being of the cow is synonymous with the well being of the entire family. This is true even among Sikhs, who did not attach religious significance to the cow.

People will get upset if you kill pets ,which is very much true even in US.  This is an undeniable fact.
Counter me if you can otherwise these kind of videos contribute nothing to the discussion.

Right. So bull slaughter upsets chaddis because *every single* bull is absolutely critical in the creation of cows which are beloved pets. And what about bullocks? Why does their slaughter hurt? Because a bullock is representative of chaddi limpwristedness?

I can only laugh at your ignorance. Some Bulls have that role, but apart from that in a predominantly agrarian India, bulls and bullocks performed many roles (ploughing the fields, help circulate water wheels that fetch water). So considering their utility and value they provided to agriculture, they were looked after.  At the end of the day, the association with the same species as the cow, made it sacred enough not to kill them, and along with the cow, they were looked upon as a pet. This is a cultural issue originating in religion, as people associated well being of the bovines to their general sense of well being.  As far the as the ban on cow slaughter itself, though not desirable,  it  was listed in BJP's  LS election manifesto, and as far as I can see it does not violate the constitution.

The Ban itself is not a proper solution in modern India. However, having initiated it, I do agree that bullocks can be removed from the ban, even if it is operationally difficult and liable to be mis-used by mixing cows and Bulls and violate the the ban, especially when they are packed in a truck. I am sure given your deep interest in the subject, you will offer yourself to  take the role of enforcing the ban on slaughter of cows, and allow only slaughter of bullocks Smile

Going by your lofty rationalization, these farmers who are today cribbing about the absence of any market for their bulls, bullocks and barren cows are being untrue to their culture and their religion. They're just fukular sickulars feigning agrarian distress to justify their anti-Hindu attitudes and activities.

Moreover, our religion and culture is so much richer from having millions of bulls, bullocks and barren cows roaming the landscape, foraging on garbage and choking on those. That is the most rational end-of-life approach for livestock.

Bravo sir, you outdid yourself with this very rational and logical explanation. Thank you once again for the entertainment.

PS: I sincerely mean the compliment. This is more entertaining than your usual, yawn-inducing, limpwristed breastbeating over Muslims and Pakistan.
