It’s hard to believe, as some people are claiming and even returning their awards in protest (such as to the Sahitya Academy which in the past had also given an award to late Mr. Kalburgi) that Mr. Kalburgi paid with his life for opposing caste system and idol worship in Hinduism and that BJP (as a political party and Govt.) might have had something to do (in terms of intolerance) with this tragedy.

Not believing in the caste system and idol worship is nothing new in Hinduism and is quite well accepted and tolerated by Hindus. The Arya Samaj, a main stream Hindu sect (one of many, for example) has been practicing and preaching the same thing (no caste system and no idol worship) for well over a hundred years, and nobody from the Hindu community has physically attacked or harmed anyone from Arya Samaj (its administrators or followers). In addition, many members and officials belonging to the old Jan-Sang party (the forerunner to BJP) used to belong to Arya Samaj, which clearly shows that there hardly would be any reason or basis, ideologically and traditionally, for anyone as a Hindu or belonging to BJP to cause harm to a person for not believing in the caste system and idol worship.

Perhaps there is some other reason (e.g. personal vendetta / animosity) behind the attack on Mr. Kalburgi, and not because of religious intolerance in Hinduism or on the part of BJP (as a party or Govt.).

Did you forget to mention that Klingons were offended by his not believing in the caste system and idol worship, as some people (especially returning the Sahitya Academy Awards) seem to think that he lost his life for those ideals?

Interesting email response from a 1970 IIT-KGP batchmate (aero guy):

"Don't seek to find causes for the current climate of "intolerance" in Hindu teachings. The simple fact is that Modi has shut down many popular routes of corruption which were siphoning off national wealth (e.g. LPG subsidy, urea, coal block auction and many others). The rouge beneficiaries of such scams with the help of their erstwhile masters (read Congress, friend of the corrupt and crooked) are creating an artificial climate of "intolerance" with the sole purpose of destabilizing the country and set up road blocks to its economic progress. Fortunately saner elements are taking counter measures. Read Anupam Kher, Raveena Tandon, Salim Khan and Salman Khan."

Btw I want to add the following. People who continue to support quotas / reservations in education and jobs according to caste instead of economic consideration and who want the continuation of religious / communal laws instead of UCC (uniform civil code: one law for everyone, irrespective of race, religion, caste and gender) should first recognize the bias and intolerance in their own thinking and actions.

Sevaji, didn't Modiji recently say in Bihar that reservations would continue?

Sevaji, didn't Modiji recently say in Bihar that reservations would continue?

HA, that was probably done to make the caste quota supporters in Bihar feel less victimized and "intolerated" and not vote against BJP in elections.
