It's silly of Bharat Karnad to ascribe motives to the IAF's disdain for Tejas, particularly when the LCA project was kicked off in 1984 at the IAF's behest - as a replacement of the aging Mig 21 fleet. ADA/DRDO failed miserably in the project execution. Far from delivering 100 combat aircrafts by '94 as agreed, they could get their first prototype airborne only 17 years later after project kickoff, in 2001.

From prototype to production took another 13 years, a full three decades after the project was kicked off!! And that too with all kinds of compromises and lacunae. As many as 53 critical requirements were missing in LCA Mark 1.

With that kind of a pathetic track record, it is irresponsible to promote Tejas as some kind of a cutting edge aircraft and to browbeat the IAF into accepting a mediocre, unreliable rattletrap with most critical systems still imported from other countries.

India's air defences can't be hostage to hyper-jingoistic made-in-India rhetoric. I expected far better from someone of Karnad's credentials.

Yeah, great! What you see in the political arena is happening in every sphere - there are CONartists and CONmen everywhere. So, after 60 years of disregard for work ethic and quality, problems with production of Tejas are to be expected. Pappu is now trying to milk the Dalit vote, he is visiting the family of the student who committed suicide. Kraziwallah is also farting on the issue for votes - why didn't he resign when women were brutally raped in Delhi after he became the mayor of Delhi municipality? Garibi Hatao - my foot!
