they could very well lose this presidential election and hillary/sanders could end up nominating someone who is an ultra liberal in the mould of kagan or RBG. this may be their one chance of getting someone moderate this time around. and if they lose, RBG will not be around for long and they'll get two ultra liberals.  if they end up winning the WH, RBG is not going to be around for much longer and they can get their red meat originalist as her replacement. if they're smart they'll go through with a proper nomination process and confirm this guy. this is a simple probability calculation and if they don't pursue the course i've outlined, we'll have to conclude that the trump moronitis disease has spread to the establishment.
