most tamilians who need to learn hindi, because they live in hindi speaking regions of india, do speak fluent hindi. they did so voluntarily without any government fiat. tamilians were some of the first indians who become voluntary migrants. many members of my extended family who have lived in india outside of TN are fluent in the languages of the regions they live in, including hindi. by contrast, hindians who live in TN and work in central govt research and educational institutions can't speak an iota of tamil.
i suspect the phenomenon of singapore tamilians being fluent in mandarin is no different. in other words, the inconsistency is something manufactured and existing in your mind only.

i don't know, but from an economic standpoint, learning mandarin is highly beneficial these days wherever you are. i'd learn mandarin if i had the bandwidth.

The same study also might explain the need for Tamil on ATMs, where it talks about monolingual grandparents.http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/~haroldfs/540/handouts/sparadox/sparadox.html wrote:In Singapore, the situation is more complex, with Tamil (and Malay and Mandarin Chinese) offered throughout pre-University education, but in the case of Tamil, at increasingly hyperpuristic levels. The system is referred to as a bilingual one, but in actuality it is an English-medium school system with large amounts of `mother tongue' instruction in the elementary grades. At higher levels, the amount of Tamil diminishes, and it is also decreasingly `practical' i.e. hyperpuristic to an extent not even found in Tamilnadu. The result is an increased alienation from Tamil, since the hyperpuristic version they are presented with is given no support in any other domain of Singapore life, with the exception of Tamil news broadcasts on SBC television. In other programming, and in radio, more colloquial versions of the language hold sway. Jeganathan puts it this way:Educational Policy in Singapore
Since Tamil has no economic value in consumer-oriented Singapore, it is seen by most Tamils as having no value at all, and many, after passing their Cambridge A-level exams (necessary for entry into higher education) never use it ever again. The question many Tamils ask themselves is, tami cooru poodumaa? `Will Tamil put rice (on the table)?'Tamil is taught as a second language for the Tamil pupils. Most of these pupils speak English with their friends and even at home with their English-educated parents. Only where there are grandparents who are not English educated might these pupils speak Tamil. ...
The Tamil language taught in schools, therefore, appears to be more for evaluation purposes ... ... This has therefore led to a concern for accuracy work ... [i.e.] accurate use of the language in the classroom [rather] than ... outside the classroom. (Jeganathan 1993:80-81).

that's short sighted, but understandable from the viewpoint of young people. the reasons for studying tamil in my mind are the same as the reasons for studying latin, greek, or sanskrit.

Re: [maxentropyman] resolve this inconsistency
There was once a post by Kayal where she/he was gloating about a sign board at a rest room in Eiffel tower, where 'toilet room' was written in tamil, along with some other languages. She/he was feeling that by writing 'toilet' in Tamil, the French have recognised Tamil as the 'international language', 'classical language', etc. Lol! The fact of the matter is, the European countries have given asylum to a number of sri lankan tamil refugees in the 80s and 90s....possibly until Prabhakaran died. The sign board must've been written for the benefit of those monolingual tamils.

I am sure there must have been a sign in Hindi as well "Hither ek Toilet hai"
Perhaps, the French are afraid that the Indians might pee or poop anywhere at will.

Yeah, but naarthies don't get all excited and gloat with (a false sense of) pride when they see a word or two of hindi written anywhere outside of India.Marathadi-Saamiyaar wrote:Kinnera wrote:There was once a post by Kayal where she/he was gloating about a sign board at a rest room in Eiffel tower, where 'toilet room' was written in tamil, along with some other languages. tamilians speak whichever language they want to speak. does that trouble you? if it does, lower yourself, arse first, v..e..r..y slowly onto a sharp object, while saying "ayyo, mummmy-jee." by doing so, not only will you cure your trouble with tamil, but you will instantly become bilingual.brie wrote:singapore:
