The F 18 is eminently suitable for Indian requirements for the following reasons---

It also has a naval variant and hence can be bought for the navy's aircraft carriers also .

The air force variant also has the same role as the Rafale---that is more of a strike aircraft with some air defence capabilities .

F 18 should be preferred over F 16 ( which is also being offered ) because of the fact that Pakistan does not possess it . Pakistan has the F 16 and knows how to defend against it , but not the F 18 .

Of course F 18 is not as advanced as Rafale , but we get three F 18s at the cost of one Rafale . And if F 18 is built in India as Boeing is promising , then it will be even more cheaper than Rafale which the French have refused to build in India . So basically we get 150 F 18s at the price of 36 Rafales .
