Very common for some people due to various reasons to get stuck in their PhD program. I spent 5 and half years after my masters degree in a US University and the way things were going it looked like it will take another 3 years to graduate. It is very frustrating since you hear stories of students graduating in year 3 or 4 of their PhD program or in 5 years after getting their BS degree. I finally got a job and continued to do the PhD part-time but it went nowhere. I still regret about it today which is 20 years from when it happened. I can understand what this guy went through but that is not an excuse to what he did. Sometimes things don''t happen the way you want it to be even if you are a topper.

Many times, these PhD dudes lose interest looking at their friends getting married, getting jobs and settling down. Also, they realize the reward for their hard work is meagre compared to what their friends make. Add to that many get married which adds to complications. Worse, they realize after PhD, and the job hunt, they have to struggle for GC and then the marriage. Just the thought of these challenges is enough to unnerve many as they dont think of all these before they begin their PhD.
PhD is only for those really interested in the subject matter and those with singular determination. Also, they should not have illusion about money or dollars. Otherwise just dont get into it.
