It is true that Lord Rama was an Uttar Pradeshi, as was Lord Krishna. Buddha spent his life in the region in and around Uttar Pradesh, and so was the case with Mahavira (founder of Jainism). The Upanisads were composed in Uttar Pradesh. The Mahabharata depicts an armed conflict which took place near Uttar Pradesh.

Finally, Adi Sankaracharya gained fame all over India after he travelled to Uttar Pradesh, and participated in philosophical debates. It is in Uttar Pradesh (specifically, in Kashi/Varanasi/Benaras), also, that Adi Sankara wrote his famous commentaries on the Upanisads and the Gita. Had Adi Sankara remained in his native Kerala he would have probably died in obscurity.
