First the santorum hit the ceiling...
... and now it crashes back to the ground.
A week after his magical finish at the Iowa caucuses, Santorum crashed back to earth Tuesday night, with a disappointing fourth or fifth place finish in New Hampshire — the final placing was still in flux late Tuesday —raising questions about his staying power heading into South Carolina.
The paltry 10 percent he registered here sucks away much of the momentum he had earned last week and raises the stakes for his campaign heading into the Palmetto State.
Furthermore, his decision to spend five days campaigning here — instead of bypassing it for South Carolina — is already being second-guessed as he now faces what’s close to a must-win situation in the first southern primary next Saturday.

I told you so.... Those who win Iowa caucus are doomed to fail. Clinton even skipped Iowa, and Bush won the NH first.
Watch for Huntsman to edge to second position and give Romney a run for his money. Paul is too rigid and will fall half way through.
But, Obama will win with a female VP candidate.

Now, apparently the Hunt is over for Huntsman..and he will be a Romneyman.

I wonder who will be next. With the religious right lining up behind Santorum, why is Perry fighting on? As long as Huntsman was in, he didn't have to worry about coming in last in SC. Now he will likely achieve that distinction.

Republicans should stop dropping out based on tiny polarized sampling of electorate in Iowa. If you have money you should run for a while. Given the fact that so many candidates have risen and fallen quickly, it makes sense to hold on for a while. No one even remembers that Trump was once in a frontrunner position.

>>>But the flip side of the coin is that the longer the divisiveness, the more the inability to rally behind solidly behind the front runner later. Of course, the one thing they may have going for them is the tanking economy. This is too early to call at this time.

There is enough time to rally. Once the presidential debates kick in thats when the rallying will happen. There is still a long way to go. At the end of the day Republicans who are tired of Obama will mostly vote for whoever wins the Republican primary. You will need to attract enough democrats/independents.

>>> There has been a lot of vitriol in the air, which can aid Obama. The other problem is that Romney, the most likely candidate, is not that well-liked across the board among republicans. Of course, the economy is Obama's achilles' heel , but given his shrewdness in campaigning, the GOP shouldn't take any chances

the republican voter is a mass of contradictions who is far removed from any sense of reality. hence a single consensus candidate will not emerge. romney is all they've got. they can take him happily or kicking and screaming. their choice.

Re: First the santorum hit the ceiling...
The longer they kick and scream, the better it is for Obama. The more attacks Republicans launch against Bain Capital and Romney's French-speaking elitist ways, the better it is for Obama. I hope this thing drags on at least into Super Tuesday. That can happen if the weekend endorsement of Santorum influences enough voters in South Carolina. It will be even better if Perry pulls out before Saturday, although that seems unlikely.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:Kris wrote:There is enough time to rally. >>>> I would say its more the republican party that is a mass of contradictions, with economic conservatives and social conservatives sharing the same tent. The key issue now is economics and the latter has pretty much hijacked the debate away from this. Maybe this two party system has outlived its use, with society consisting of disparate subsets in terms of priorities/interests. Yeah, as things stand now, Romney is pretty much it for the GOP.

here are some categories that come to mind. guess their voting preferences:
richie rich patricians, guilt-ridden richie rich patricians, wife beating trailer trash, labor union member, suburban soccer moms, angry middle aged white collar fat guys named chuck, loose jawed white southerner

The last demographic I understand is starting to come into the GOP fold now, having forgiven the party of lincoln for having freed the slaves...

Though Romney may not be liked by conservatives they would have him rather than Obama. When the question of electability comes in, they will see that Romney has probably the best chance. The vitriol will be forgotten once the guns are trained on Obama.
